Open Access to 7-Volume International Critical Tables

Readers of K-News have two weeks of open access to a select title or group of titles each issue. This issue features access to a title from the
Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Subject Area:

International Critical Tables of Numerical Data, Physics, Chemistry and Technology (1st Electronic Edition) Re-published by Knovel Corporation, (c)
2003. This classic and well-known reference was originally published from 1926-1930 for the National Research Council in 7 volumes. It contains an
enormous amount of critical data on inorganic and organic compounds, and pure substances. Featuring physical, thermodynamic, mechanical, and other
key properties, it is a major reference source used by those involved in chemistry, physics, and engineering. In 2003, Knovel converted this
publication into full-text searchable electronic format that makes data easily accessible. The most important tables were made interactive for
increased searchability and user-friendliness.

Start using all 7 volumes of ICT now! You have immediate and unlimited access for the next two weeks--no registration required. Enjoy!

Other Voices

Thank you, Knovel, for breathing new life into the old International Critical Tables! This monumental 1920's work, praised for its comprehension and
reviled for its bad indexing (its nickname was the "Intentionally Cryptical Tables") has long been unavailable to most scientists. Now it has once
again become a valuable data source for chemists, thanks to Knovel's enhanced indexing of the contents. -- Bartow Culp, Chemistry Librarian, Mellon

Coming Soon Titles

Food Chemicals Codex (5th Edition), (c) 2003, published by National Academies Press. This important title provides the accepted standards for quality
and purity in food chemicals, officially referenced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and many agencies in other countries. The Fifth Edition
updates the field, incorporating the definitive monographs of previous editions with completely new material. Each monograph provides a physical
description of the substance and its use in foods, lists its purity requirements, describes the appropriate tests to determine compliance, and
provides packaging and storage guidelines. Other features include: New lower limits on contaminants; revised lead and heavy metal limits policy; new
analytical method for fluoride; more accurate infrared spectra for identification; and, reordering and revision to make the book clearer and easier
to use.

Machinery's Handbook (27th Edition) & Guide to Machinery's Handbook, (c) 2004, published by Industrial Press. Celebrating its 90th year, this newest
edition combines volumes of knowledge, information, and data, gathered, revised, and improved upon by industry experts. Extraordinarily comprehensive
yet easy to use, this handbook provides mechanical and manufacturing engineers, designers, draftsmen, machine toolmakers, machinists and students
with a broad range of basic and advanced information. It includes industry fundamentals and standards, as well as new material reflecting
technological advances and editorial improvements, making the 27th Edition the best tool ever! Included with the 27th Edition is Guide to Machinery's
Handbook, which helps solve problems typically encountered by both draftsmen and machinists. The Guide allows users to become more familiar with the
wide range of contents found in the Machinery's Handbook.

Smithells Metals Reference Book (7th Edition), (c) 1998, published by Elsevier. This is the only single volume that provides all the data and
references needed by those practicing metallurgy. This seventh edition of the standard reference work for metallurgists includes important new
chapters on powder metallurgy and superconductivity. All chapters have been thoroughly revised to bring them up to date with developments since the
last edition in 1983.

>> TUTORIAL

Properties of Building Stones

Scenario: A civil engineer is designing a dam for a large farming operation to serve as a source of water for thousands of cattle. There is an
abundance of limestone in the area and the engineer wants to know if the properties of this limestone (compressive strength, tensile strength,
porosity, etc.) would make it an acceptable building material for the project. Knovel can help.

1. On the Knovel Home Page in the first Search box enter the keyword limestone. Click the Search button. (Remember to start with a simple search!)

2. The Search Results page shows 1354 matches in 177 books. The first book in the list is International Critical Tables of Numerical Data, Physics,
Chemistry and Technology (1st Electronic Edition)--this issue's featured title. In scanning the search results, notice the first result called
Building Stones. Click the Table (73) link next to it.

3. An interactive table with properties information for building stones opens and shows 73 entries for limestone. Different limestone compounds from
across the United States and around the world have been tested and this table shows the results. Our engineer will have no problem finding relevant
data to answer whether or not limestone will work.

>> KOOL TIPS

Quickly Locate Productivity Tools

Ever want to locate Knovel's productivity tools quickly for a given title? Knovel has made it easy. In the Table of Contents for any title with
productivity tools (like International Critical Tables) you will notice along the top of the TOC area the word Filter with at least one icon next to
it. These icons serve two purposes. The first purpose is to let you know what kind of tools are available in the title. Second, if you click on the
icon, it will automatically highlight all sections where that that tool can be found. Easy! Just glance down the TOC after clicking the icon and the
chapters or sections with that particular productivity tool are highlighted in light green.
