Open Access to Industrial Electronics Title

Readers of K-News have two weeks of open access to a select title or group of titles each issue. This issue features access to a title from the
Electrical & Power Engineering Subject Area:

Industrial Electronics for Engineers, Chemists, and Technicians - With Optional Lab Experiments - Published by William Andrew Publishing/Noyes, (c)
2001. Turn to this multipurpose reference for a practical understanding of electronics in the factory or laboratory. It's perfect for people who are
not electrical engineers, but who need to use electronic equipment every day at work. Avoid or solve common problems in the use of electronics in the
factory or lab and optimize the use of measurement and control equipment with this helpful resource! The guide is easily understood by anyone who has
taken a high school physics course--yet it provides quick, specific solutions for such electronics issues as feedback oscillation, ground loops,
impedance mismatch, noise pickup, and optimization of PID controllers.

Start using Industrial Electronics now! You have immediate and unlimited access for the next two weeks--no registration required. Enjoy!

"Our researchers want information at their desktop. We have to deliver the information to our customers in the format that they prefer. With Knovel,
we know that they are getting current, regularly updated information, in a useful format, with minimum additional work on our part. It's a great
resource!"

Recently Released Titles

Food Flavorings (3rd Edition), (c) 1999, published by Kluwer Academic Publishers and available in the Food Science Subject Area. This title provides
a comprehensive review of the natural sources of flavor ingredients and the formulation, manufacture, and application of food flavorings, revised and
updated to include recent advances in the field. This third edition adds new chapters on flavors used in pharmaceuticals and tobacco, flavor
modifiers, and quality control. The other topics are essential oils; oleoresins, tinctures, and extracts; fruit juices; synthetic ingredients;
beverage flavorings and their applications; confectionary and bakery products; savory flavors for snacks and crisps; thermal process flavorings; and
the development of dairy flavorings. The composition of lemon and orange oils and the botanical classification of fruits are appended.

Handbook of Separation Process Technology, (c) 1987, published by John Wiley & Sons and available in the Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Subject
Area. This title surveys the selection, design, and operation of most of the industrially important separation processes. It discusses the underlying
principles on which the processes are based, and provides illustrative examples of the use of the processes in a modern context. It also features
thorough treatment of newer separation processes based on membranes, adsorption, chromatography, ion exchange, and chemical complexation. This title
includes a review of historically important separation processes such as distillation, absorption, extraction, leaching, and crystallization.

Emergency Relief System Design Using DIERS Technology - The Design Institute for Emergency Relief Systems (DIERS) Project Manual, (c) 1992, published
by Design Institute for Physical Property Data/AIChE and available in the Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Subject Area. This comprehensive
sourcebook brings together a wealth of information on methods that can be used to safely size emergency relief systems for two-phase vapor-liquid
flow for flashing or frozen, viscous or nonviscous fluids. Design methodologies are illustrated by selected sample problems. Written by industrial
experts in the safety field, this book will be invaluable to those charged with operating, designing, or managing today's and tomorrow's chemical
process industry facilities.

Trade Shows & Events

Industrial Research Institute's "Information Services Directors" Meeting, Phoenix, AZ, Feb. 17, Marriott Phoenix Mesa Hotel. Knovel CEO Chris Forbes
will present "How Knovel Leverages Productivity and Solves Problems for Scientists, Engineers and Researchers." If you would like to meet with Chris
either at the meeting or while he is in the Phoenix area, please send an email to chris@knovel.com.

SLA (Special Libraries Association) Fairfield County Chapter February Meeting, Westport, CT, Feb. 24, Westport Public Library. Knovel is sponsoring
this meeting which will offer techniques for identifying and creating internal champions and positioning the information center as a strategic
resource. Knovel representatives attending will be Bryan Keane, Jim McDonald, and Doug Sears.

>> TUTORIAL

Ohm's Law

Scenario: A student in an introductory physics class has an upcoming laboratory session on Ohm's Law and simple circuits. One of the experiments is
the (classic) measurement of electrical resistance of a light bulb. Although the textbook and lab manual supply a good description of the
relationship between voltage, current, and resistance (Ohm's Law), our student wants another perspective on how it works. Knovel can help.

1. On the Knovel Home Page in the first Search box enter the keywords ohms law. Click the Search button.

2. The Search Results page shows 238 matches in 66 books. The first book in the list is Industrial Electronics for Engineers, Chemists, and
Technicians - With Optional Lab Experiments--this issue's featured title. In scanning the search results, notice the second result called The Water
Analog. This entry seems intriguing--a comparison of water to electricity. Click the Text (2) link next to it.

3. A PDF file opens to Chapter 2, which is devoted to a discussion of Ohm's Law and its measurements. The chapter supplies a memorable metaphor
comparing a water pumping system and its component pieces to that of an electronic circuit. The information provides an excellent framework of
understanding for our student. The chapter even supplies its own recommended experiment using common components easily purchased at a local Radio
Shack to illustrate the principles discussed.

>> KOOL TIPS

Apostrophes in Search

Notice in today's tutorial the keywords ohms law were entered in the search box. You could have also entered ohm's law (the grammatically correct
version, with an apostrophe). The search result when using the apostrophe? Identical! There is no difference in searching for terms with apostrophes
or without. This is one more way that Knovel anticipates and programs our service to make sure users quickly find the answers they seek.
