JSTOR New Life Sciences Collection

Because your institution participates in both the HEALTH &
GENERAL SCIENCES and the BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COLLECTIONS, I am
writing to you in advance of your 2008 annual invoice to let you know
of an important change to the collections.

Beginning in 2008 we will be combining the Health & General Sciences
and Biological Sciences collections into a single LIFE SCIENCES
COLLECTION. Our goal has always been to create a large,
intellectually coherent aggregation of science journals valuable to
users and to libraries. While we pursued this through the creation of
several discreet collections initially, it is increasingly clear to us
that we can maximize the benefits we aim to provide for the community
by bringing them together. An ecologist, for example, will need to be
reading articles in /Science/ and /PNAS/ as well as those published in
/Ecology/. These connections are reinforced by the thousands of
citations and references we have now located and are linking across
the journals in these collections.

THE ANNUAL ACCESS FEES AND THE ARCHIVE CAPITAL FEES FOR THE LIFE
SCIENCES COLLECTION ARE LOWER than they were for Health & General
Sciences and Biological Sciences. As a result, YOUR ANNUAL ACCESS FEE
FOR THE LIFE SCIENCES COLLECTION WILL BE LOWER than the combined AAF?s
that you had been paying for the individual science collections. You
can expect to see the Life Sciences Collection reflected on your
January invoice with the new, reduced AAF fee.

Additionally, YOU WILL BE RECEIVING A CREDIT FOR THE AMOUNT OF THE
ARCHIVE CAPITAL FEE that you previously contributed for the Health &
General Sciences and Biological Sciences collections. That credit
will be available to you when the Life Sciences Collection is
officially announced several weeks from now. We will notify you at
that time, and provide you options on how you may apply your credited
ACF fee.

We are delighted to be making this change in the way we offer the
science titles in JSTOR, and also to be able to reduce the fees for
the new collection for you. We trust that you will welcome this
decision. Please contact us at any time should you have any
questions.

Best wishes for a happy, healthy, and successful 2008!

Regards,

Jason E. Phillips
Associate Director, Library Relations

Free Music Downloads at Alexander Street Press

We are pleased to introduce our newest tool for promoting your library to your patrons: free weekly music downloads. The service is available to everyone, so even if you don't subscribe to Classical Music Library or other Alexander Street Press databases you can still point your users to this valuable resource.

The program is simple: each week, we select a work from Classical Music Library and make it freely available for download. Users can select the format they would like, either MP3 or WMA, and then download the tracks onto their personal computers, transfer them to iPods and other MP3 players, or burn them onto discs.

The best part is how easy it is to get started. Just paste the following URL, http://musicdownloads.alexanderstreet.com/promo/, onto your library's homepage, send it in an email announcement to students and faculty, or post it to a listserv or weblog. That's all you have to do. Your patrons can start downloading music immediately, and can sign up for email alerts letting them know when new music becomes available. We have also posted links to the site on your institution's Classical Music Library homepage, so your patrons will be reminded of this resource every time they visit.

http://musicdownloads.alexanderstreet.com/promo/

This week, we are featuring Mozart's Don Giovanni in its entirety —the work once described by Søren Kierkegaard as the most perfect opera ever produced. Don't wait— go to http://musicdownloads.alexanderstreet.com/promo/ now to download this for yourself, and start sharing this resource with your patrons. They're sure to thank you for it.

OCLC Special Updates and Offers -- WorldCat
================================================================

WorldCat.org adds ability to build and share lists

WorldCat.org has been enhanced with a social-networking feature:
Users across the Web can now add individual items cataloged in
WorldCat to personalized lists. They can group items owned by
your library and other WorldCat libraries, and share their lists
with friends, colleagues and millions of site users.

Users can add any book, video, article or another item to a list
right from its WorldCat record, or use the checkboxes and "Save
to" button in WorldCat search results.

Patrons can build as many lists as they like on any subject

They can make lists for every purpose--personal or professional,
educational or recreational. Some ideas:

- Movies I want to check out
- Mystery novels I recommend
- Research sources to review for my paper
- Excellent childrens' books
- Best CDs for learning about jazz

They share lists with friends and the world

Lists can be public--which allows other WorldCat users to
search for and discover them--or private so only the list
author can view them. (A list's privacy is easily changed by
following its "Settings" link.) And a public list can be
shared with anyone, regardless of whether they've used
WorldCat before: The "Share" link lets a list author send an
invitation via e-mail.

Easy to manage and export

List items can be added or removed at any time, and items can
even be copied between lists. Users can also:

- Reorder a list by title, author, publish date or date added
to the list
- Save a short note for each added item
- Export a list in CSV (comma-delimited) format

The ability to export a list in common citation styles to
bibliographic-software formats, including EndNote and RefWorks,
will be added soon.

Users can start making lists now

All they need is an e-mail address to create a free WorldCat
account. Let your customers know about this exciting new
feature--encourage them to visit WorldCat.org and sign up!

*** More WorldCat news ***

WorldCat profiles have expanded

A WorldCat user's online profile now allows them to provide
greater detail about their interests and occupation; link to any
WorldCat lists they have created; and link to a personal Web
page, RSS feed or instant messaging address. Providing this
personal information is optional, and the user can still control
the public availability of their e-mail address or their entire
profile in the privacy settings for their account.

Export bibliographic citations from WorldCat records

Individual WorldCat records now include the option to export a
bibliographic citation for the item. Citations can be saved in
two popular formats: EndNote and RefWorks. Look for the "Export"
links next to the "Cite this Item" link. (Enhanced export
capabilities will be available soon.)
