Tweaking NetLibrary

Many Sweet Briar users have experienced frustration using NetLibrary. The following tips will help everyone have a better experience with this product.

NetLibrary is a full-text collection of over 43,000 online books in all subjects. Search by author, title, or keyword. You may also search the full-text for specific words or phrases. The most important thing to remember about NetLibrary is that if you click on "View this eBook" that title will be locked up for 15 minutes UNLESS you "close" the eBook. Directly below the NetLibrary logo in the upper left of the browser screen you will see the words Open Items. Beneath Open Items you will see the word Current followed by the title you are viewing. To the right of the title, you will see the words, Close Item. You should always close the item when you are finished viewing it!

In order to prevent problems in getting back into an eBook you are using, you should also always leave your eBook open in a separate browser window. If you need to go to other web pages while you are using an eBook, open a new browser window and do your web browsing there. Leave your eBook open in it's original window! If you need to leave the computer you are working on, it would be best for you to either "close" the eBook (if it is not checked out) OR (if the item is checked out) check the item back in before you close the browser window.

Please note that NetLibrary books cannot be downloaded due to copyright law, but individual pages can be printed. The advanced search on Net Library accepts Boolean operators. If you do not know how to do a Boolean search, see Search Techniques.

NetLibrary eBook of the Month

April eBook of the Month
The Coming Generational Storm:
What You Need to Know about America's Economic Future

In 2030, as 77 million baby boomers hobble into old age, walkers will
outnumber strollers; there will be twice as many retirees as there are
today but only 18 percent more workers. How will Social Security and
Medicare function with fewer working taxpayers to support these programs?

According to Laurence Kotlikoff and Scott Burns, authors of The Coming
Generational Storm, if Washington continues on the course it has set,
we'll see skyrocketing tax rates, drastically lower retirement and
health benefits, high inflation, a rapidly depreciating dollar,
unemployment, and political instability. The U.S. government has lost
its compass, say Kotlikoff and Burns, and the Bush administration's
spending and tax policies have charted a course straight into the coming
generational storm.

Designed to increase awareness of online resources and highlight the
value of your eBook collection, NetLibrary's eBook of the Month is
provided through the generous support of The MIT Press. Don't miss this
unique opportunity to showcase your NetLibrary collection by sharing
this timely and thought-provoking overview of the generational imbalance.

What's New at Earthscape

What's New at Earthscape
>
>
> The earth continues its warming trend. Temperatures at the
> Earth's surface increased by an estimated 1o F (0.6o C) over
> the 20th century. The 1990s were the hottest decade of the
> century and 1998, 2001, and 2002 were three of the hottest
> years ever recorded. Projections of future warming suggest a
> global increase of 2.5o F (1.4o C) to 10.4o F (5.8o C) by
> 2100, with warming in the United States expected to be even
> higher. This warming, along with the associated changes in
> precipitation and sea-level rise will have important
> consequences for the U.S. and the global environment and economy.
>
> Columbia Earthscape's March update focuses on global climate
> change and continues to deepen the collection by presenting a
> diverse range of policy perspectives on this critical
> environmental issue as well as journals and scientific papers
> documenting and interpreting the phenomenon.
>
> Earthscape adds the full collection of reports addressing
> global climate change published by The Pew Center on Global
> Climate Change
> since its
> inception in 1998. The Pew Center on Global Climate Change is
> producing important analysis of key climate issues. Over the
> past five years, the Pew Center has issued 45 reports from
> top-tier researchers on key climate topics such as economic
> and environmental impacts and practical domestic and
> international policy solutions. The Center's mission is to
> provide credible information, straight answers, and innovative
> solutions in the effort to address global climate change.
>
> The North American Environmental Law And Policy Series

> environmental law and policy in Canada, Mexico and the United
> States, including official documents related to the novel
> citizen submission procedure empowering individuals from the
> NAFTA countries to allege that a Party to the agreement is
> failing to effectively enforce its environmental laws.
>
> Redefining Progress
> approaches
> environmental policy from a social justice perspective and
> works with a broad array of partners to shift the economy and
> public policy debate towards sustainability. This month's
> update includes the entire collection of Redefining Progress's
> publications from 1997 to 2004.
>
> Earthscape adds to the existing collection of publications
> from The Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research
> . The
> Tyndall Centre brings together scientists, economists,
> engineers and social scientists, who together, are working to
> develop sustainable responses to climate change through
> trans-disciplinary research and dialogue on both a national
> and international level - not just within the research
> community, but also with business leaders, policy advisors,
> the media and the public in general.
>
> The International Research Institute for Climate Prediction
> or IRI's
> mission is to enhance society's capability to understand,
> anticipate and manage the impacts of seasonal climate
> fluctuations, in order to improve human welfare and the
> environment, especially in developing countries. This month
> Earthscape adds the Climate Information Digest

ACLS History E-Book Project Launches POD Program

ACLS History E-Book Project recently launched its new Print-on-Demand Program, making 250 hard-to-find and out-of-print books readily available to students, scholars, and the general public. Working with the University of Michigan's Scholarly Publishing Office (SPO) and the POD vendor, Lightning Source, HEB uses its own digital files and digital printing techniques to produce standard print books in a rapid and cost-effective process that approaches the quality of the original print editions.

Titles are available in all fields and in a range of formats, including hardcover editions, looseleaf reader's copies, spiral copies, and tapebound copies. >> TUTORIAL

Alcohol Used in Perfume Formulation

Scenario: A perfume chemist/compounder is working on a new formulation. In order to ensure solubility of all the ingredients, the compounder would
like to find a suitable co-solvent, perhaps an alcohol, to ensure that all ingredients form a clear solution. The alcohol used is required to have a
high enough vapor pressure to ensure that the final formulation is gradually released into the air. The compounder needs to identify and evaluate
alcohols with a boiling point that falls between 100-200 C, and a melting point between 50-100 C. Knovel can help.

1. On the Knovel Home Page click on the Advanced Search button at the top right of the screen.

For the first Search Criteria select keyword (default) in the Category drop down list. When you select it, enter the value alcohol in the Keyword(s)
box.

For the second Search Criteria select physical constants in the Category drop down list. In Field Name, select boiling point. For Operator select is
between (>=/<=). For Numeric Range enter 100 - 200.

For the third Search Criteria select physical constants in the Category drop down list. In Field Name, select melting point. For Operator select is
between (>=/<=). For Numeric Range enter 50 - 100.

Click the Search button at the bottom of the screen.

2. The Search Results page shows 57 matches in 7 books, including the first result which is Knovel Critical Tables--this issue's featured title.
Click on the Table (25) link for the first result, "Basic Physical Properties of Chemical Compounds." This launches a Knovel Interactive Table
showing 25 alcohol compounds that match our criteria for boiling point and melting point. The perfume compounder can now quickly evaluate various
alcohol compounds and select the best candidates for the new formulation.

>> KOOL TIPS

Chemical Structure Diagrams

When opening a Knovel Interactive Table that lists properties information for chemical compounds, you will often notice a column called "structure"
that contains a picture of a benzene ring (pictured at the right). When you click the benzene ring icon, the name and chemical structure for that
particular compound will appear. Kool!

Agreement Reached Between the Frick Art Reference Library and ARTstor

The Frick Art Reference Library and ARTstor announced today that they had
reached an agreement to collaborate on the digitization, preservation, and
distribution through ARTstor of approximately 20,000 high quality digital
images from the Library's famous photoarchive, one of the world's greatest art
historical research resources.

This collaboration will focus on the Frick Library's renowned Negative
Collection, an archive of approximately 60,000 large-format negatives that is
prized by scholars as a unique visual record of lesser-known and largely
unpublished European and American paintings. These paintings are often
documented with invaluable, unpublished information and scholarly opinions
assembled under the Frick's auspices. The Negative Collection is the product
of both ongoing acquisitions programs and dedicated photographic campaigns
sponsored by the Frick Library. One of the Frick Library's top priorities is
the digital reformatting and preservation of deteriorating negatives from the
Negative Collection. The present collaboration will advance this key
institutional goal, building upon support previously proffered by the Carl and
Lily Pforzheimer Foundation.

The present project will involve two key archives from the Negative Collection.
The first archive consists of nearly 9,000 large-format, glass plate negatives
produced in the early decades of the twentieth century by the Italian
photographic firm of Sansoni. The Sansoni archive richly document fresco
cycles and other forms of architectural decoration in many remote sites
throughout Italy, including significant works that have since suffered
irreversible damage or destruction.

The second archive consists of nearly 10,000 large-format glass plate and
nitrate negatives, as well as polyester "interpositives," produced by the
archives of the firm A.C. Cooper, Photographers, London, and related
photographic archives. These photos principally document paintings as they
passed through art auction galleries in London in the 1920s and 1930s, often in
transit from one private collection to another.

These two landmark archives will greatly enrich ARTstor's value to a wide
academic and museum audience. In reaching this agreement, Anne L. Poulet,
Director of the Frick Collection, and James Shulman, Executive Director of
ARTstor, expressed their enthusiasm in collaborating to use digital
technologies to make these unique scholarly resources more broadly available
for noncommercial educational and scholarly purposes. "Just as the founding of
the Frick Art Reference Library marked an extraordinary milestone in providing
an image repository for in depth scholarly research, our collaboration with
ARTstor will set us on a sure and valuable course to preserve and develop the
Library's mission through digital technology," comments Poulet.

ARTstor (www.artstor.org) was created in 2001 as a nonprofit initiative of The
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, and is now an independent non-profit organization
dedicated to serving education and scholarship in the arts and the humanities.

The Frick Art Reference Library was founded in 1920 by Helen Clay Frick as a
memorial to her father, Henry Clay Frick. Its mission was and remains to
gather photographs of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and illuminated
manuscripts executed between the fourth and the mid-twentieth century by
European and American artists; to collate with each photograph facts relating
to the object's history and present location; and to create a comprehensive
research library for the study of Western art. Today the Library's holdings of
books, periodicals, auction sale catalogs, special collections and archives
complement the photoarchive to comprise one of the world's most valued art
research centers and the most comprehensive resource on the history of
collecting and patronage.

Ovid PsychInfo

> Dear Ovid Customer,
>
> We are pleased to announce that PsycINFO will be reloaded on Ovid on
> or around March 2nd.
>
> With this reload we are introducing links from the Cited References to
> the associated PsycINFO bibliographic record. Not only will PsycINFO
> users have the opportunity to view the references for indexed
> materials, they will now be able to extend their research with direct
> links to the bibliographic records for many of these sources. Cited
> reference searching can also be an effective means of expanding the
> scope of a literature search to find additional relevant articles that
> may have been missed in a standard subject search.
>
> Later in 2005 this Cited Reference functionality will be enhanced
> through the inclusion of linking to associated full text whether that
> full text resides on Ovid (e.g. Ovid PsycARTICLES) or is available on
> an external web site (via their Links@Ovid resources). Other
> developments that will be released later in the year include forward
> linking to retrieve all the PsycINFO records that cite a particular
> article of interest.
>
> The PsycINFO reload will contain an update to the Thesaurus of
> Psychological Index Terms that includes the addition of 200 terms and
> 123 cross-referenced terms from such topic areas as Neuropsychology,
> Educational Psychology, Industrial/Organizational Psychology,
> Psychometrics, Artificial Intelligence, and Treatment. Some of the new
> primary or cross referenced terms include: Acute Stress Disorder,
> Bullying, Cognitive Science, Distance Education, Grounded Theory,
> Online Therapy, Polymorphism, Procedural Justice, Religious
> Fundamentalism, and Social Loafing.
>
> Another enhancement is the addition of unpublished test names to the
> Test & Measures field. As a reminder, the Test & Measures field does
> not indicate which tests are included as part of the article, but
> rather the tests that were used to conduct the research. To increase
> the richness of the data in the Test & Measures field, PsycINFO is
> retrospectively "mapping" some frequently occurring test and measure
> names to older, database records. This enhancement will increase the
> number of results that are retrieved when searching the Test &
> Measures field.
>
> Other changes with the reload include a new All Journals limit that
> captures all titles, both peer reviewed and other journals; the
> enhancement of the PsycARTICLES limit to specified ISSNs and
> publication years; the ability to search for cited reference
> publishers and DOIs; as well as the ability to search for the
> electronic ISSNs (as a separate index).
>
> At Ovid we continue to strengthen our APA offerings to benefit your
> users. As well as our superior mapping, widely acknowledged to be the
> most accurate and precise available, we also offer the convenience of
> PsycINFO specific limits and indexes so that users can exploit the
> full richness of PsycINFO's content. To better support the research
> process, Ovid uniquely offers the PsycINFO Database Links Package
>
> providing users with links from PsycINFO to Open Access electronic
> full text and other valuable internet resources available free on the
> web.
>
> To supplement PsycINFO and PsycARTICLES we also offer APA's
> PsycBOOKS*. PsycBOOKS comprises over 600 titles including more than
> 1,500 entries from the APA/Oxford University Press Encyclopedia of
> Psychology. Customers may also be interested in another APA database,
> PsycCRITIQUES. We are now completing licensing to add this new
> searchable database of book reviews in psychology in the coming months.
>
> During 2005 we look forward to bringing you more about new content
> from the APA and other leading publishers as well as new
> functionality. Should you have any questions regarding this latest
> reload, please contact Ovid Technical Support at support@ovid.com
> .
