EarthScape

For the second year in a row, the cloak of sea ice on the Arctic Ocean failed to grow to
its normal winter expanse according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. The finding
led some climate experts to predict a record expansion of open water this summer.

This month, Earthscape (www.earthscape.org) offers recent publications on climate change
in the Arctic, Antarctic and Greenland, as well as the drastic impact these changes are
having on native populations in the Arctic Circle.

In addition to research and policy publications, the Earthscape homepage lists several
powerful web-based educational resources for all levels of learners as well as an
e-seminar from the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory entitled "Earth's Variable Climate".

New Functions in WorldCat

Users of OCLC's WorldCat database may now add reviews, notes and tables
of contents to WorldCat records through a new option that facilitates
sharing among library users worldwide. The user contribution option in
the WorldCat and WorldCat-related databases on the OCLC FirstSearch
service extends a pilot begun in late 2005 to enable contribution of
content to WorldCat records in the Find in a Library interface of the
Open WorldCat program.

User-contributed content helps extend the OCLC cooperative to include
record-enhancing information from non-cataloging library professionals
as well as library users. For example, family members may add notes to
records for genealogical materials about their families, or community
members may comment on historical photographs or documents from digital
collections about their communities that reside in the WorldCat
database.

Content such as notes and tables of contents may be expanded or edited
by other members of the viewing community. Personal reviews are visible
to all WorldCat users, but may not be edited except by the original
reviewer.

A new tab labeled "Add/View Comments" in the full record display
contains notes, reviews and tables of content that have been contributed
by WorldCat users. Upon release of this new option within the
FirstSearch service, all content contributed through the Find in a
Library interface will be visible. Content added through both Find in a
Library and FirstSearch will be visible in all public views of the
WorldCat database.

Users can immediately contribute content after registering a personal
account. Their account allows them to return to the interface at any
time, log in and create or revise content. Guidelines for content
contributions are provided, and OCLC monitors all submissions.
User-contributed content is associated with a WorldCat record, but is
maintained separately and does not become part of the record's
authoritative bibliographic information.

WorldCat-related databases available through the FirstSearch service
that also include the new user-contributed content are Ebooks
(Electronic Books), WorldCat Dissertations and Theses and all
custom-built group catalogs.

Now that users have the ability to add content to WorldCat-related
databases, the base functionality is in place to build on. We are
interested in hearing your suggestions and encourage you to contact us
via the Comments link in FirstSearch or the Feedback link in
OpenWorldCat. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing the content
you add to WorldCat!

Questions? Consult the online help or contact your regional service
provider (http://www.oclc.org/contacts/regional/) or OCLC Customer
Support (1-800-848-5800 or support@oclc.org).

New results e-mail alert system You can now receive new search results via e-mail as they become available. A new feature of the WilsonWeb Search History screen, the SDI (Selective Dissemination of Information) Alert system sends daily, weekly, or monthly e-mail alerts, citing new articles as the WilsonWeb databases are updated, for up to a year.

New Automatic Statistics Reports for Z39.50 users WilsonWeb subscribers can now generate their own Z39.50 reports direct from the WilsonWeb Usage Statistics Module: no waiting, and no need to request a report from the Company. Watch for an option to schedule automatic Z39.50 reports for monthly or weekly delivery via email, coming soon!

More versatile searching of the journal directory The journal directory now becomes a search option in its own right: allowing you to search the lists of periodicals covered by the WilsonWeb databases more precisely, then directly launch searches for articles in specific periodicals (or specific issues).

Clickable images in results lists on biography databases Thumbnail photos let users know if images are available, and help them identify the subject of their search.

More navigable results on periodicals databases Clicking on the title of a record in "brief display" brings you not just to the full record, but to that full record among a list of full records, so you can continue to browse records in "full" mode.

New options for emailing results Users can include a name to identify themselves plus a helpful note to the recipient.

Color page images WilsonWeb full text periodicals databases now include color page images, making graphical information easier to read and interpret.

A new, more attractive Basic Search screen A colorful, simple-to-use design masks the power of thorough All-Smart WilsonWeb searching.

New database descriptions for searchers Click the new "Databases Described Link" for a brief description of any database selected: subjects covered, coverage dates, and more. Searchers can now know at a click if they've brought their research to the right resource. From the brief description, they can also click the "Details" tab for more in-depth information.

Bridges: A Jewish Feminist Journal

Bridges: A Jewish Feminist Journal is a showcase for the creative work of Jewish
feminists. It brings together the traditional Jewish values of justice and tikkun olam
("healing the world") with insights honed by the feminist, lesbian, and gay movements.
It provides a place in which Jews, feminists, and activists can exchange ideas and deepen
the understanding of the relationship between Jewish identities and activism.
