New at JSTOR

THE /BRITISH MEDICAL JOURNAL/ AND /SCIENCE NEWS/ TO JOIN JSTOR’s
HEALTH & GENERAL SCIENCES COLLECTION

New York, NY— The /British Medical Journal/, one of the oldest and
most widely read peer-reviewed medical titles, has begun
collaborating with JSTOR to make their complete back files available
through JSTOR, the not-for-profit online scholarly journal archive.
The /BMJ/, founded in 1840, features past issues and articles
totaling more than 350,000 pages. /BMJ/ will be offered through
JSTOR’s Health & General Sciences Collection and is expected to be
available to JSTOR participants in late 2007.

A total of five of the BMJ Group’s public health and ethics
journals will be offered through JSTOR’s Health & General Sciences
Collection, including the /Journal of Epidemiology/ and /Community
Health, Tobacco Control,/ the /Journal of Medical Ethics/, and
/Occupational and Environmental Medicine/, in addition to the /BMJ/.

JSTOR has also begun to collaborate with /Science News/ to make
their back files available to JSTOR participants. /Science News/ is
an award-winning weekly periodical covering important research in all
science fields. /Science News/ began in 1922 as the /Science
News-Letter/, whose articles focused on “the early days of atomic
energy, the beginning of modern genetics, and many other
developments.” Their publisher, Science Service, has a mission to
“advance public understanding and appreciation of science among
people of all ages through publications and educational programs.”
/Science News/ will also be available through the Health & General
Sciences Collection with an anticipated availability of late 2007.

JSTOR’s Health & General Sciences Collection, formerly the General
Science Collection, originally featured several of the most important
historical scientific journals published: /Science, PNAS/, and the
publications of the Royal Society of London. The back issues included
in this archive extend back to the seventeenth century and in total
covers more than eight hundred years of journal publication. In
September 2006, the collection was renamed Health & General Sciences
to reflect the inclusion of journals in the health sciences,
including important journals in nursing, epidemiology, and other
health sciences topics. We are pleased to announce JSTOR’s
collaboration with the /British Medical Journal/ and /Science News/,
as they will add further historical and topical depth to this
collection.

Participation fees for the Health & General Sciences Collection will
remain unchanged, and existing participants will have access to these
new titles as soon as they are publicly available. There will be no
overlap of content between the Health & General Sciences Collection
and any of the multi-discipline Arts & Sciences Collections or the
Biological Sciences Collections in JSTOR. Two titles from the Health
& General Sciences Collection will continue to be offered through the
Mathematics & Statistics Collection: /Philosophical Transactions:
Mathematical/, /Physical and Engineering Sciences and Proceedings:
Mathematical/, /Physical and Engineering Sciences/.

NetLibrary - eBook of the Month

Caesar in Gaul and Rome: War in Words
By Andrew M. Riggsby
University of Texas Press, 2006

Anyone who has even a passing acquaintance with Latin knows "Gallia est omnis divisa in partes tres" ("All Gaul is divided into three parts"), the
opening line of De Bello Gallico, Julius Caesar's famous commentary on his campaigns against the Gauls. But what did Caesar intend to accomplish by
writing and publishing his commentaries, how did he go about it, and what potentially unforeseen consequences did his writing have?

These are the questions that author Andrew Riggsby pursues in the award-winning Caesar in Gaul and Rome. Named by the Association of American
Publishers as the 2006 Professional/Scholarly Publishing Division (PSP) award winner for Excellence in Classics and Ancient History, Caesar in Gaul
and Rome uses contemporary literary methods to examine the historical impact De Bello Gallico had on the Roman reading public and offers a fresh
interpretation of Julius Caesar's Gallic War that focuses on Caesar's construction of national identity and self-presentation.

Designed to increase awareness of online resources and highlight the value of your eBook collection, the April eBook of the Month is provided through
the generous support of the University of Texas Press. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your NetLibrary collection by sharing this insightful
guide to the commentary of Julius Caesar.

ERIC Adds Find in a Library Feature

Individuals who search ERIC at www.eric.ed.gov may notice a new Find in a Library link in the search results. ERIC is partnering with OCLC to leverage the OpenURL Gateway and WorldCat to provide users with a link from ERIC records to library resources. The feature dramatically streamlines the process of obtaining full text.

The Find in a Library feature offers two linking paths: OpenURL and WorldCat. For users associated with one of the 1,100 libraries registered with the OCLC OpenURL Gateway, selecting Find in a Library will lead to a search of the library's electronic holdings and seamless access to available full text. If no full text is available users may choose to link to WorldCat.

If the user is not affiliated with a library registered in the OpenURL Gateway, Find in a Library will connect to WorldCat to find the nearest library with a print or electronic version of the material. WorldCat is the world's largest network of library content and services and catalogs a billion items in more than 10,000 libraries worldwide.

ERIC's Find in a Library Feature

ERIC is pleased to announce the release of a powerful new Find in a Library
feature on the ERIC Web site at www.eric.ed.gov. ERIC is partnering with
OCLC to leverage the OpenURL Gateway and WorldCat to provide users with a
link from ERIC records to electronic and print resources available in
libraries. The feature dramatically streamlines the process of obtaining
full-text.

Find in a Library offers two linking paths: OpenURL access to library
holdings and WorldCat. For users associated with one of the 1,100
libraries registered with the OCLC OpenURL Gateway, selecting Find in a
Library will lead to a search of the library’s electronic holdings and
access to available full text. Only ERIC records with ISSNs or ISBNs will
display a Find in a Library link. There are 350,000 of these records in
the digital library, the majority of which are journal articles. If no full
text is available users may choose to link to WorldCat.

WorldCat is the Find in a Library default if the user’s institution is not
affiliated with the OpenURL Gateway. This service identifies the nearest
library with a print or electronic version of the desired material.
WorldCat is the world’s largest network of library content and services.

Metropolitan Museum and ARTstor Announce Pioneering Initiative to Provide Digital Images to Scholars at No Charge

In a new initiative designed to assist scholars with teaching, study, and the publication of academic works, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will distribute, free of charge, high-resolution digital images from an expanding array of works in its renowned collection for use in academic publications. This new service, which is effective immediately, is available through ARTstor, a non-profit organization that makes art images available for educational use.

"The Metropolitan Museum of Art has long sought to address the significant challenges that scholars confront in seeking to secure and license images of objects from the Museum's collections," stated Metropolitan Museum Director Philippe de Montebello in making the announcement. "We hope, through this collaboration, to play a pioneering role in addressing one of the profound challenges facing scholars in art history, and scholarly publishing, today."

ARTstor's Executive Director, James Shulman, added: "By taking such a bold step in supporting publications based on art-historical research, the Metropolitan is providing enormous leadership to the entire sector. Scholars – in higher education and in museums – have been struggling with the question of how digitization might help to enable, rather than hinder, scholarly communications. For all involved, it is obvious that, when faced with an important directional challenge, the Metropolitan is providing decisive leadership."

Initially approached by the Metropolitan Museum in 2005 to develop this initiative, ARTstor has worked in close consultation with Metropolitan Museum staff to create its new service, entitled "Images for Academic Publishing" (IAP), which will make images available via software on the ARTstor Web site (www.artstor.org). Initially, nearly 1,700 images representative of the broad range of the Metropolitan Museum's encyclopedic collection will be available through the more than 730 institutions that currently license ARTstor. Efforts to expand this accessibility are now underway and will be announced by ARTstor at a later date. For more information about ARTstor's plans for its "Images for Academic Publishing" service, please send email to IAP@artstor.org

ARTstor, a digital image library, was created in 2001 as a non-profit initiative of The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It is now an independent non-profit organization dedicated to serving education and scholarship in the arts and humanities. The more than 730 non-profit institutions currently participating in ARTstor are located in North America, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art – founded in 1870 with a mission to collect, preserve, and display works of art spanning 5,000 years of world culture from every part of the globe, and to educate the public about art – is the most comprehensive art museum in the Western Hemisphere with a collection now including more than two million works of art.

AMICO and ARTstor

We wanted to take a moment to provide some information about the content
from the former AMICO library currently in ARTstor. As part of its
525,000 image library, ARTstor has incorporated approximately 85 percent
of the former AMICO library with 84,872 images from over 20
AMICO-contributing museums (please see the list below of museums
contributing and the number of images contained in ARTstor). Several of
the former AMICO museums are working with us to provide more images from
their collections, enhanced cataloging information and/or higher quality
images for the records we already have.

In addition to the collections that we build with individual
photographers, scholars, special collections at libraries, and
photoarchives (such as the Frick and the National Gallery in
Washington), we are working with those museums listed below and many
that were not a part of AMICO to add their high quality images and data
as well. Those museums include: Berlin State Museums, British Museum, J.
Paul Getty Museum, Musee Guimet, Museum of Modern Art, and National
Museum of Natural History. In addition, through our collaboration with
Art Resource, the Scala Archives and the Erich Lessing Culture and Fine
Arts Archives, we are regularly adding new high-quality images of museum
objects -- these include over 20,000 works from major European museums.
Finally, we would note that our collaborations with museums are ongoing
and dynamic - as illustrated by our recent launch of Images for Academic
Publishing through which the Metropolitan Museum is making available
publishable images for scholarly publications at no fee through ARTstor.

Changes at Project Muse

Project MUSE is pleased to announce that one additional title will join the list of
titles previously announced for inclusion in the 2007 Premium Collection and the Arts and
Humanities Collection: âEUR~Partial Answers: Journal of Literature and the History of
IdeasâEUR^(TM) published by the Johns Hopkins University Press. The first issue in MUSE
will be Volume 5, Number 1. The print ISSN is 1565-3668. The e-ISSN is not yet
available. The addition of this title to the two collections does not affect the cost of
either of those collections; it is being added at no additional charge. The list price of
the collections as previously announced remains the same. A complete description of the
collections and pricing options for 2007 is available on the MUSE website:
http://muse.jhu.edu/about/subscriptions/subscriptions_2007.html.

MUSE regrets that one title in addition to the ones announced this past summer will not
be continuing in MUSE in 2007: âEUR~Labor Studies JournalâEUR^(TM) was acquired by a
publisher that does not participate in MUSE. For information purposes, the e-ISSN is
1538-9758 and the final issue in MUSE is Volume 31, 2006-2007. All issues previously
published in MUSE will remain in the collection.

New Titles at ACLS E-Books

The ACLS Humanities E-Book Collection (formerly the History E-Book Project) has just
added 138 books to its collection, bringing the total to 1507. The latest round includes
a significant increase in the number of titles in Women's Studies, adding 66 titles. As
current subscribers, you have access to all of the new books added to the collection.

Cataloging records are available for download, and instructions for obtaining these
records are included below. As you know, it is very important to load the MARC records
into your catalog as soon as possible, because most users become familiar with, and begin
to access, the site from the library catalog.

In addition, at the request of the original publisher, seven titles have been removed
from the HEB site (attached is a spreadsheet). Please delete the records for the HEB
versions of these books from your catalog.
