ARTstor and JSTOR

JSTOR and ARTstor would like to announce the availability of a
prototype which aims to facilitate searching across the archived
content in JSTOR and the image content in ARTstor. The JSTOR/ARTstor
Search Prototype is available in the JSTOR Sandbox (http://sandbox.jstor.org[2]),
an area of the JSTOR website used to showcase possible new features
and to gather feedback to help direct future development of JSTOR.

The JSTOR/ARTstor Search Prototype allows JSTOR users to conduct a
basic search across three types of content: JSTOR article text, JSTOR
image caption text, and ARTstor image metadata. After conducting a
search, users are presented with search results separated into three
tabs:

- The “Articles” tab lists JSTOR search results for matches in journal
article text.
- The “Images from Articles” tab shows results of a JSTOR caption
search, and includes thumbnails of each article page containing an
image with a keyword match in the image caption.*
- The “ARTstor Images” tab lists results of matches for the keyword or
phrase in ARTstor image metadata. The search is performed on the
creator, title, and subject terms of the metadata.

Users at sites that participate in both JSTOR and ARTstor will be able
to view thumbnails of ARTstor images, and may link directly from JSTOR
to content in ARTstor. Users at institutions which are not currently
ARTstor participating sites may view ARTstor image metadata in the
search results but will not see the image thumbnails.

The main goal of featuring prototypes in the JSTOR Sandbox is to
assess their value to JSTOR users. We encourage you to try the
prototypes and send us your feedback via the “Comment on this feature”
link on any Sandbox page.

If you have questions about the JSTOR/ARTstor Search Prototype, please
send a message through the Feedback Form (http://artstor-sandbox.jstor.org/feedback/LuxComment).

*To date, JSTOR has acquired captions for approximately 65% of the
titles held in the archive, and is continuing to capture them
retroactively. As a result, caption searching will be less successful
for archive content digitized before 2002 (including all Arts &
Sciences I journals), when JSTOR first began to acquire caption text.
Captions have been acquired for images in all Language & Literature,
Architecture & Architectural History, and Art & Art History journals,
as well as the journal Science.

Addition to ARTstor from Art Resource

* New Addition to the ARTstor Digital Library: European art and
architecture from Art Resource, Scala Archives *

ARTstor recently announced a collaboration with Art Resource and Scala
Archives (Florence, Italy) (http://www.artstor.org/info/collections/scala_announce.jsp).
Through this collaboration, ARTstor will make available approximately
12,000 high quality images of European art and architecture, with a
special focus on the archaeology, art and architecture of Italy and on
the collections of the major museums of Italy and other European
countries.

The first fruits of this collaboration are now available to ARTstor
users. They include more than 1,100 high quality images of major works
of Italian and other European art.

To convey some sense of the range and depth of this expanding
collection, there are already

- more than 60 new images of or relating to works by Botticelli
- more than 50 new images of or relating to works by Caravaggio
- more than 30 new images of or relating to works by Correggio
- more than 40 new images of or relating to works by Mantegna
- more than 80 new images of or relating to works by Raphael
- more than 275 new images of works from the Uffizi Gallery
- more than 25 new images of works from the Louvre

We anticipate releasing another approximately 2,000 Scala images in
late 2006 or very early 2007.

To browse these new ARTstor images, please click on ?Image Gallery? on
the ARTstor ?welcome page? and then select ?Italian and European Art
from Scala Archives.? Or simply search such keyword phrases ?Scala
Florence? or (for an individual artist) "Scala Botticelli" etc.

Please note that we are hard at work "clustering" these superior
images with other ARTstor images that depict the same works of art.
For an example of this clustering process, through which we are
striving to help ARTstor users find the optimal image of a given work
of art, please search for "Raphael Disputa Scala".

NetLibrary October eBook of the Month

The Stem Cell Divide: The Facts, the Fiction, and the Fear Driving the Greatest Scientific, Political, and Religious Debate of Our Time

There has been much recent debate about the merits, dangers, and nature of stem cell research. Some see in it the answer to every debilitating
disease known to man, while others see it as a step away from human cloning.

In the search for the truth about stem cell science, the author of the October eBook of the Month has interviewed the scientists whose cutting-edge
research is at the very heart of this hot-button issue. This eBook explains what they have accomplished so far, what they’re currently doing, and
what they see on the horizon.

The Stem Cell Divide does not take sides, and the author debunks the distortions and exaggerations that come from every camp. This eBook does not
tell readers what to think, but gives them the facts necessary to form their own opinions about one of the most divisive, complex, and potentially
life-changing developments in history.

Designed to increase awareness of online resources and highlight the value of your eBook collection, the October eBook of the Month is provided
through the generous support of AMACOM Books. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your NetLibrary collection by sharing this indespensible guide
to the stem cell debate.

ARTstor Adds Three Digital Collections from Cornell

New Addition to the ARTstor Digital Library: Three Digital
Collections from the Cornell University Library *

We are pleased to announce that the ARTstor Digital Library has just
been enriched by three important digital collections from the Cornell
University Library. The collections are:

*Andrew Dickson White Architectural Photographs*

The Andrew Dickson White Architectural Photographs Collection is a collection of nearly
1,400 19th- and early 20th-century photographs of architecture,
decorative arts and sculpture in Europe and the U.S. These materials
will complement both ARTstor’s already strong holdings in the history
of architecture and its expanding holdings in the history of
photography.

*Southeast Asia Visions *

“Southeast Asia Visions” is a digital collection of European travel accounts of Southeast Asia dating
between 1630 and 1930, from Cornell University Library's John M.
Echols Collection and Rare and Manuscript Collections. This collection
provides online access to the visual content of more than 350 books
and journal articles written in English and French. The images now
included in ARTstor from the Southeast Asia Visions collection were
selected for the quality of their first-hand documentation and visual
beauty, providing a comprehensive visual representation of Southeast
Asia as recorded by Europeans. The accounts in the collection include
some 10,000 images, drawings, photographs, prints and maps, many of
them in color. This collection will powerfully complement ARTstor’s
already rich holdings in the art, architecture and culture of Asia (as
reflected in the Huntington Archive of Asian Art, the Mellon
International Dunhuang Archive, and the ACSAA Collection from the
University of Michigan, the first fruits of which have recently been
released into the ARTstor Digital Library).

*Masterpieces from the Hill Ornithological Collection, Cornell
University Library*

This selection from the Hill Ornithological Collection at Cornell offers a collection of more than 200 images that
traces the development of ornithological illustration in the 18th and
19th centuries. In its focus upon the 18th and 19th centuries, the
collection complements ARTstor’s already strong holdings in the
history of prints (anchored by ARTstor’s digital version of The
Illustrated Bartsch) as well as ARTstor’s growing collection of
natural history illustration (especially the “First Fleet” collection
from the Natural History, London).

To browse these new images, please click on “Image Gallery” on the
ARTstor “welcome page” and then select from the following: “Andrew
Dickson White Collection of Architectural Photographs (Cornell
University Library)”; “Southeast Asia Visions: John M. Echols
Collection (Cornell University Library)”; or “Hill Ornithology
Collection (Cornell University Library).” Or you may simply search by
keyword (e.g. “Visions Cornell”).

We are grateful to the Cornell University Library for wishing to share
these outstanding digital collections through the ARTstor Digital
Library.

questions about ARTstor in general, please contact User Services.

IngentaConnect

We would like to advise you about a few changes you will see on
IngentaConnect from today, let you know about our latest work with
GoogleScholar (and how it benefits you), and inform you of the latest
publishers who will be adding content to the service in the near future.

Firstly, the latest release of IngentaConnect incorporates a number of
features driven by feedback from our users:
* Increased support for citation managers, with additional download formats
BibTeX and RDF now being offered alongside previously available
EndNote,ProCite and plain text.
* New social software interoperability enabling users to bookmark citations
to del.icio.us, FURL, CiteULike, Connotea and Bidsonomy with just one click.
* Newly-architected page layouts to standardize display of user-interactive
options, and to increase visibility of tools at article-level (the site's
entry point for most users), thereby increasing efficiency and usability.

The new pages have been designed to present our tools/options more
consistently, by consolidating these in the right-hand navigation menu. The
tools are now presented as expandable menu options, with headings of:
Print, Subscription options, Article access options, Export option, Linking
options, Alerting options, Bookmarking options. To read more about the
rationale behind these changes, please see this posting on our blog:
http://allmyeye.blogspot.com/2006/09/refining-article-page.html

In addition to these user-driven developments, you will soon notice
discreet advertising on some pages of the site; we have introduced this to
enable our publisher partners to explore alternative revenue streams for
scholarly content. To view the full press release about these changes,
please visit: http://www.ingenta.com/corporate/company/news/trade/ic_2_5.htm

As ever, we welcome your feedback about IngentaConnect -- please contact us
at help@ingentaconnect.com if you would like to comment on these changes.

Secondly, we are working closely with Google Scholar at the moment to
provide them with library holdings data, which will enable them to link
your users to your subscriptions on IngentaConnect, even if you don't have
a link resolver. Google Scholar will recognise users within the IP ranges
you have registered with us, and add a prominent "Full Text@IngentaConnect"
link to records from subscribed content. This will link your users to
appropriate copies of articles and, we hope, save some of the frustration
and costs of linking to unsubscribed content. We are pleased to be the first
service Google have chosen to work with on this project. To read our full
Google Scholar press release, please visit:
http://www.ingenta.com/corporate/company/news/trade/google_library_links.htm

Thirdly, we are very pleased to let you know that the following publishers
have recently signed to begin hosting their content with IngentaConnect:

American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry
Cambridge Medical Publications
Civic Research Institute
Inderscience Publishers
Mammal Research Institute
Norwegian University of Technology and Science
Oxford Economic Forecasting
Oxford International Review
Philosophia Africana
University of Iowa

In addition, Brill Academic Publishers have re-signed for a further 3
years' e-publishing via IngentaConnect. The full press release of this
announcement can be viewed at:
http://www.ingenta.com/corporate/company/news/trade/new_pubs_sep06.htm

Please do not hesitate to contact us via help@ingentaconnect.com if you
have any queries or feedback.

BioOne's New Database

BioOne is very pleased to announce the name of our new database, BioOne.2, scheduled to
go live in January 2007. BioOne.2 has 25 confirmed titles, with more anticipated for
addition prior to the launch date. A list of the 25 titles is attached. For
counter-balance, the original collection will be identified as BioOne.1. We are also
pleased that we will be offering significantly discounted pricing on subscriptions to
BioOne.2 for libraries ordering both collections.

BioOne wants to thank all the subscribers who took time to participate in our "Name the
New Database" contest. Three winners were selected and will receive a $100 American
Express gift card.

I am excited to be introducing BioOne.2 to libraries in the United States and Canada. We
are beginning to take orders now for the January launch. Please feel free to contact me
for more information and a price quote.

Sincerely,

Carrie Esch

Update of ERIC Web Site

ERIC is pleased to announce the release of the updated ERIC Web site.
Improvements and enhancements to the redesigned site include:
Lighter graphic design – to speed load time and present an
uncluttered appearance
Expanded journals list – information now includes years of coverage
and total number of records in ERIC
Refined relevance sorting and new sort options – users may now choose
the default (relevance), author, publication date, or source options
Search term highlighting – yellow highlighting helps users see where,
and how frequently, their search term(s) occur in the results set
The new Web site reflects valuable user feedback and technology advances.

New Books in ACLS E-Book Project

The ACLS History E-Book Project has just added 130 books to its collection, bringing the
total to 1398. As current subscribers, you have access to allof the new books added to
the collection. Instructions for downloading your new MARC records are in an addendum
below. However, there has been an important change in our MARC records.

With the current release, the History E-Book Project now is making use of Handle
technology for its persistent url system. This change is the result of innovations by our
distribution partners at the University of Michigan Library's Scholarly Publishing Office
(SPO). SPO's former permanent url system (the name resolver system) will continue to
function, but there are some advantages to the new handle-based urls that make it worth
reloading your catalog records to take advantage of this change.

The old name resolver system was developed at a time when standards and methods for
permanent urls were still evolving and was always intended as a temporary bridge to a
more functional persistent url scheme. Although persistent url technology will no doubt
continue to evolve its current stability made this a reasonable time to make this change.
The Handle System, developed by the Corporation for National Research Initiatives, is a
general-purpose distributed information system that provides efficient, extensible, and
secure identifier and resolution services for use on networks such as the Internet.

As well as ensuring greater reliability and meeting current standards for persistence,
the switch will also mean some changes in the user experience. Formerly, the persistence
urls took the form of http://name.umdl.umich.edu/heb99999.
Handle based persistent urls look like http://hdl.handle.net/2027/heb.99999.

More important for most users, the handle-based url will resolve directly to the volume
(except in the case of multiple volumes associated with a single record, in which case
the user will be presented with a list of the volumes from which to choose).

The old form of the urls will continue to work, but the new urls are more durable over
the long run as well as more satisfying to users, and HEB wouldlike to encourage you to
update your records.

More information about handles can be found at:
http://www.handle.net/introduction.html

If you have any questions, please email us at info@hebook.org.

Best,
Eileen Gardiner and Ronald G. Musto

MARC RECORDS DOWNLOAD
The MARC records for the ACLS History E-Book Project are available via yourbrowser from
the following url: ftp.umdl.umich.edu/pub/records/

You will have two choices for downloading records:
acls1-5a.zip
acls5a.zip

New subscribers should downlaod the full set: acls1-5a.zip.

We also encourage all other subscribers to download the full set of acls1-5a.zip and
replace your older records with the new records with Handles. Thenew records will simply
overwrite your old records.

However, should you choose to simply add the new records available and havemixed url and
Handle records, you can simply download acls5a.zip.

Both downloads contain three files:
a. The records in USMARC communications format
b. The same records in ASCII format
c. readme.txt - in ASCII format (explains what is contained in each of
the above)

You will notice a discrepancy between the number of files and the number ofbooks in the
collection due to the fact that multi-volume collections havea single record.

New Web Site Debuts at www.eric.ed.gov

On September 3, 2006, ERIC released a new streamlined and restructured
Web site. With a more powerful search engine, faster-loading pages,
and an updated home page design including up-front links to ERIC
features and information, the new site reflects ERIC-user feedback as
well as technology changes.

The list of journals indexed in ERIC has been reformatted and now shows
years of coverage and the total number of records in ERIC. The About
ERIC page and some Help text has been rewritten for improved
readability. Other areas will be similarly improved in the coming
months. The addition of a dynamic "In the Spotlight" area on the home
page will offer a changing assortment of ERIC news, user-assistance
information, and additional features.

New Search Engine is Capstone of Redesigned Site

Searching the ERIC collection is now faster and easier than ever,
thanks to the updated site design and new search technology. The
cross-platform search engine offers the user community the following
improvements to enhance their ERIC experience:

? Significantly faster searches and document retrieval
? Search terms highlighted in each results-record
? New relevance-weighting standards to improve the quality of the
search-results display
? Addition of three options for sorting search results - author,
source, and publication date
? Removal of the stemming feature means that quotes are no longer
needed for exact matching of individual words or acronyms. The
asterisk (*) wildcard provides stemming-like functionality (sometimes
referred to as truncation), if needed. To use the wildcard feature,
specify a minimum of three letters (e.g., laugh* to retrieve laugh,
laughed, laughing, laughter)
? Enhanced author searches permitting inclusion of first or middle
initials (e.g., "Doe, C. John" or "Doe, John C.")

Underpinning ERIC's "new face" is the same core commitment to
dissemination of education research and information. ERIC welcomes
your input and invites you to contact us at ericfeedback@csc.com.

ERIC Content Continues to Grow

Through August 2006, more than 37,000 bibliographic records from 2004
to 2006 were added to the ERIC database, including nearly 9,000 free
full-text documents from the U.S. Department of Education, state
education agencies, professional organizations, and other nonprofits
with grey literature. More than 850 recent journal articles (dated
2004 to 2006) are now available at no cost in full-text format. ERIC
has comprehensively indexed articles from more than 500 journals, and
added documents from nearly 340 organizations producing non-journal
literature.

Did You Know.

ERIC Update reaches users in every state of the U.S., the District of
Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, the Virgin Islands, and the Northern
Marianas; every Canadian province; Mexico, and 32 other countries.

During August, ERIC users wrote from across the U.S., as well as
Austria, Canada, England, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Israel, Kuwait,
Mexico, Poland, Russia, Singapore, Switzerland, Taiwan, and more. We
look forward to hearing from you.

The Museum of Modern Art and ARTstor announced a project to digitize
nearly 23,000 photographs from the MoMA Archives comprehensive
collection of exhibition installation photographs and distribute them
through ARTstor. This material richly documents every major exhibition
held at the Museum, beginning with the inaugural exhibition of 1929.
Enhanced and comprehensive online access to this important collection
will strongly encourage and advance scholarship on the history and
institutions of modern art.

In reaching this agreement, Milan Hughston, Chief of Library and
Museum Archives and Max Marmor, ARTstors Director of Collection
Development, expressed their shared enthusiasm in collaborating to use
digital technologies to make these high quality images of contemporary
art and architecture more broadly available for noncommercial
educational and scholarly purposes.

"The Museum's 75th Anniversary in 2004 gave us a chance to highlight
this collection in a special publication, Art in Our Time, edited by
Museum Archivist Michelle Elligott and Harriet Bee. Those images were
only a small sampling of a vast body of important material, and we are
grateful to ARTstor for recognizing the value of digitizing the entire
collection for distribution," comments Hughston.

"Our new collaboration with staff of the MoMA Library and Archives,"
adds Marmor, "represents an important milestone in ARTstor's ongoing
effort to provide teachers, scholars and students with digital image
collections documenting the development of modern and contemporary
art. We are delighted to help make this important photographic archive
available now online for non-commercial use in education and
research." The MoMA installation photographs are highly prized by art
historians and other scholars. In addition to Art in Our Time, they
provided the basis for Mary Anne Staniszewskis pioneering The Power
of Display: a History of Exhibition Installations at the Museum of
Modern Art (Cambridge: MIT Press, 1998).

The MoMA Archives was established in 1989 to preserve and to make
accessible historical documents about the Museum and modern and
contemporary art. The Photographic Archive documents and maintains the
complete visual history of the Museum. The installation photographs
of exhibitions at MoMA are a unique and valuable resource. Like the
other collections in the Archives, these materials tell the story of
modern and contemporary art. Because of MoMAs singular role in the
introduction and dissemination of modern art, these photos document
this evolution and are critical to the study of modern art as well as
the history of modern museums, and the field of installation design,
according to Michelle Elligott, Museum Archivist.
