Ulrich's on CSA

Ulrichsweb.com - Identify Serials that are available via RSS Feed!

The new ?RSS Available? Advanced Search limiter makes it possible for users to identify the growing number of periodicals that are providing headlines, recent issues or other content via RSS (Really Simple Syndication). An RSS feed provides content via XML files that are then read by an RSS reader or web browser. CSA is adding RSS availability data to thousands of individual Ulrich?s records so that users can learn about the various frequencies, formats, and providers of these content-delivery feeds. Ulrich?s records also display the URL of the RSS feed(s) for the periodical. Users may create their own lists of RSS feed URLs in Ulrichsweb.com, click on the URL to link to the RSS feed, or cut and paste the URL into their preferred RSS reader.

Ulrich's Serials Analysis System - New online Tutorials!

Four new tutorials covering key features of Ulrich?s Serials Analysis System have been added to the CSA Customer Training & Education offerings: Getting Started; Your Library Reports; Comparison & Overlap Analysis Reports; and Aggregator Comparison Reports. The tutorials run using Adobe Flash Player and last approximately three minutes each. In addition to narration, each tutorial contains subtitles that may be turned on/off. Whether you are a current subscriber or just interested in learning more about the powerful set of serials evaluation tools that Ulrich?s Serials Analysis System provides, you can access the tutorials at http://www.elabs7.com/ct.html?rtr=on&s=mwc,13w1,14,8kgp,2xuk,c2fp,9mbh

Ulrich's Resource Linker - More language options and Google Scholar links!

Customers of CSA's hosted OpenURL link resolver now have the ability to select from among a growing number of language options for the A-to-Z list interface. The current list of language options includes Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese, English (US), English (UK), French, German, Japanese, Portuguese, Spanish and Taiwanese with more soon to follow. Also new in Ulrich?s Resource Linker is the ability for customers using the Mozilla Firefox web browser to display their library?s e-holdings in Google Scholar results. This added functionality allows students and others who search Google Scholar or the Google News Archive to link from results to full-text in the resources to which the library has full-text access. For more information about these exciting new Ulrich?s Resource Linker enhancements, contact support@csa.com.

CSA looks forward to continuing to enhance the Ulrich?s suite of products with serials search and discovery tools that keep your library at the center of your institution?s information hub.

STAT-USA Enhancements

STAT-USA has made a few changes to STAT-USA/Internet and USA Trade Online
in an effort to enhance the merchandise trade data available to users.

On the STAT-USA/Internet site, we have added the individual "exhibits" of
the U.S. International Trade in Goods and Services FT900 report.

On both services, we've made the Bureau of the Census' cross-classification
tables available. This lets you find out what Harmonized System numbers
correspond to a given SITC, North American Industry Classification System
(NAICS), or End Use code number.

Finally, we've posted the 2007 Calendar of Releases. This lets you know
when merchandise trade, as well as all other major economic indicators,
will be posted in 2007.

Project Muse and OAI

Project MUSE is pleased to announce that MUSE data now can be accessed through OAI, Open Archives Initiative. By launching this capability, MUSE subscribers gain flexibility with the increased number of channels by which to access MUSE articles.

MUSE is a Repository

The purpose of OAI is to facilitate the exchange of metadata between various institutions and database providers with a goal of increasing the availability of scholarly communication. It allows an institution to gather metadata from database providers. OAI is designed to work between a Harvester and a Repository. A harvester is a client application that is operated by a service provider, such as an institution, as a means of collecting metadata from repositories. A repository is a network accessible server that is managed by a data provider, such as MUSE, to expose metadata to harvesters. As a repository, MUSE will receive HTTP requests from harvesters and respond by generating and serving XML documents. The data in these documents may contain the actual article metadata or it may be more general information that would then lead to further, more specific queries on the part of the harvester. This allows for a controlled crawl of the metadata. The essence of OAI is the exchange of the data; what a harvester does with MUSE metadata once they gather it is not part of OAI. There are only 6 OAI commands:

- Identify - Tells what version MUSE supports (2.0)

- List Metadata Formats - Shows all formats that MUSE supports (Dublin Core)

- List Sets - Gives listing of all journals in MUSE, which allows for subsequent crawling of specific titles.

- List Identifiers - Finds articles pertinent to the request (which can be filtered by date or journal) but retrieves only the identifier, not the full metadata.

- List Records - Same as List Identifiers but returns full metadata records. Can result in a very large document to be served to the harvester.

- Get Record - Same as List Records but requires an article identifier and returns only that one matching article's metadata.

The OAI functionality in MUSE is still in the beta phase and we encourage subscribers to contact us with feedback about the helpfulness of this technology in searching and retrieving articles in MUSE. Feedback may be sent to the MUSE Customer Support desk at muse@muse.jhu.edu.

Changes at ERIC

OCLC is pleased to announce changes to the ERIC database. These changes
will be available Dec. 10, 2006 and are the result of the ERIC producers
changing the data they send us. Some new fields have been added; other
fields have been discontinued. The new fields apply to new records.
ERIC introduced the peer reviewed field in 2005 for journal articles
published 2004 onward. Fields that have been discontinued may remain on
legacy records but they will not be on new records. A list of the
complete changes will be sent to the Z39.50 listserv on Nov. 9. The
revised Z39.50 documentation will be available on Nov. 9 at
http://www.oclc.org/support/documentation/firstsearch/z3950/z3950_databa
ses/default.htm.

Some of the changes are:

* Peer-reviewed indicator. This field indicates if a journal is
peer-reviewed. It can be searched as an index in the Expert search or
used as a limiter.

* Education level identifies the specific education community for
which the resource is intended. This field can be searched.

* Reference count is the number of references in an article.

* Major and minor descriptors and major and minor identifiers are
no longer distinguished on new records.

ERIC provides access to over 1.1 million bibliographic records for
education-related journals and non-journal literature. ERIC links to
free full-text for over 100,000 items.

FireFox/ARTstor Issues

Due to recent releases of the Firefox and Internet Explorer browsers, we
wanted to give you an update on some of the compatibility issues that
your users may experience when using ARTstor. In general, ARTstor's site
builds are designed to be compatible with all existing versions of
certain browsers (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Mozilla, Firefox, Safari,
and PWB) at the time of the ARTstor release. In some cases, new versions
of these browsers are released after the ARTstor site build. When this
happens, we make every effort to test ARTstor in the new environments,
document any incompatibilities, and initiate any remedial fixes to
resolve outstanding issues. As we are still in this process with regard
to Internet Explorer 7.0 and Firefox 1.5.0.7 and up, we thought it would
be helpful to provide an update of where we currently stand.

Firefox (Macs only)
On September 14, 2006, Firefox released version 1.5.0.7 to improve
browser stability and to implement several security fixes
(http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/releases/1.5.0.7.html). In many
cases, this was an automatic upgrade, so we did not have much lead time
to do adequate testing with ARTstor in the new browser. Almost
immediately, we discovered two bugs specifically related to Firefox and
Macs:

1) When a user goes to log onto their ARTstor account, the email field
is available, but the user cannot input anything into the password
field. This prevents the user from successfully logging onto their
ARTstor account.
2) Immediately after launching the ARTstor Digital Library, the Welcome
Page will load in fragments. Users must mouse over the blank,
unpopulated areas for those sections to fully load. In essence, the user
must mouse over the whole screen to render the entire page.

While we were working on fixes to these bugs, Firefox released another
version of the browser (2.0) on October 30, 2006
(http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/2.0/releasenotes/). Firefox 2.0
actually fixed problem #1, but #2 still remains an issue for Mac users.
While we continue working on this outstanding page rendering bug (#2),
we recommend that Mac users either roll back to a previous version of
Firefox (0.9.1 - 1.0.8), or use the alternative Safari browser.

Internet Explorer (PCs only)
On October 18, 2006, Microsoft released version 7.0 of the Internet
Explorer web browser (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/default.mspx).
Since IE 7.0 was available in beta prior to the release, we were able to
do some testing before the new browser was made available to Windows
2003 and XP users. So far, there do not seem to be too many
compatibility issues, aside from the following:

1) When opening the Image Viewer window, the bottom row of icons often
gets covered up by the Windows taskbar. We are working on a fix to this
bug, but in the meantime, users may use the following workaround:
http://www.artstor.org/webhelp/When_I_open_an_Image_Viewer_window,_the_i
cons_and_or_navigation_bars_are_missing.htm.
2) A new major new feature of IE 7.0 is tabbed browsing. Since the
ARTstor application and the Image Viewer launch in separate windows, if
the IE 7.0 browser launches either within a tab, users will experience
some odd display issues. The default setting for IE 7.0 should be fine,
but if users experience any difficulties, they should check their
settings for tabbed browsing. Go to the Tools menu > Internet Options >
General tab > Tabs section, click on Settings button > "When a popup is
encountered" section, make sure the box next to "Always open pop-ups in
a new tab" is unchecked > Click OK.

This is a summary of all currently known bugs with the new Firefox and
Internet Explorer releases. If you experience any other compatibility
issues with either of these browsers, please do contact us (toll free:
888 278 0079 or email: userservices@artstor.org), as we are keen to
document all known bugs so that we can develop fixes as soon as
possible.

policymaking was misguided or ill-informed and offering perceptive analyses of resource allocation and policy direction for the coming century.

Designed to increase awareness of online resources and highlight the value of your eBook collection, the November eBook of the Month is provided
through the generous support of Penn State University Press. Don't miss this opportunity to showcase your NetLibrary collection by sharing this
