NetLibrary eBook of the Month

January eBook of the Month:

Lower Taxes in 7 Easy Steps
by Attorney Stephen Fishman
Nolo, 2006

Many personal finance books are full of hype, promising a radical reduction in taxes (or no taxes at all). Unfortunately, they often tout obscure tax
strategies that apply to only a handful of people -- or doubtful schemes that could bring on the IRS. Lower Taxes in 7 Easy Steps is a different kind
of book, providing insights and tactics that can reduce taxes.

Clearly and concisely, it explains the seven most valuable rules of tax planning:

1. Boost tax-free income
2. Get a lower tax rate
3. Defer paying taxes
4. Make the most of deductions
5. Take advantage of exemptions
6. Identify and use tax credits
7. Shift income to other taxpayers

Each rule is fleshed out with plenty of ideas, strategies and real-life examples that can help minimize the pain of April 15.

Designed to increase awareness of online resources and highlight the value of your eBook collection, the January eBook of the Month is provided
through the generous support of Nolo. Don’t miss this opportunity to showcase your NetLibrary collection by sharing this complete guide to lowering
taxes, one step at a time!

Renovations Under Way at Library

Renovations Under Way at Gym, Library
While students are home enjoying the winter break, renovations are under way at Williams Gymnasium and the Mary Cochran Library. Many of the improvements, which include a major redo in the women’s locker room and cosmetic changes at the library, will be completed by the time students return next month.

At the gym, the women’s locker room is being divided into five separate locker rooms. One will be what Steve Bailey, director of the physical plant, called the “general locker room.” The other four will be team locker rooms for use by Sweet Briar athletics teams and visiting squads.

Two of the team locker rooms should be finished by mid-January, he said, and the remaining two will open for business several weeks later.

The shower and bathroom spaces also are undergoing a complete overhaul, including new fixtures and tile.

The cost of renovating the locker room is estimated at $210,000.

Library carts and books sit in limbo during renovations at the Mary Cochran Library.
A couple of hundred yards away at the library, a makeover also is in progress. There are stacks of books on the floor, the staff is wearing dust masks, carpet installers are tearing out worn carpet, and navigating the Browsing Room is a bit like tackling an obstacle course.

When students return to campus, they will find new carpet, freshly painted walls in Kellogg and the reference gallery, and beautifully refinished library tables. Electrical work and repair of the book lift also are on the to-do list, as are new furnishings.

“We’ve gotten a lot of student input on the types of new furnishings we should have and we want the College community involved in this process,” said Lisa Johnston, library professor.

Renovations, at a cost of $200,000 will continue throughout the spring.

New Interlibrary Loan System

Sweet Briar’s Mary Helen Cochran Library will introduce a new fully automated interlibrary loan request system at the beginning of the 2007 spring term.

Librarian Joe Malloy says the new software, InterLibrary Loan Internet-accessible Database, aka ILLiad, is more efficient for both library staff and users, although some will have to adjust to the paperless system. “We’ll have to educate [patrons],” Malloy said. “Some people are used to jotting down a title and handing us a slip of paper.”

But those paper slips are just one of five or six different ways that the library personnel must process interlibrary loan requests now. All will be replaced by a single, online form. “That’s kind of exciting,” Malloy said.

Starting in January, the library will accept only requests that are submitted through ILLiad, but Malloy says the system’s advantages should quickly dispel any nostalgia for the old days. Among them are direct links to the request form from library databases such as FirstSearch. No more writing down titles or making copies of citations.

You’ll also be able to track the progress of current requests, and to see a history of past requests. “So, it creates a bibliography of past ILLs for you,” Malloy said. “That’s nice for researchers and students.”

A simple, one-time registration is required to use the service. Patrons should look for an upcoming campus-wide announcement that points to the registration site. Librarians also will be on hand to help with registration.

Here’s a few other ways ILLiad beats traditional ILL systems:

* It’s easier to submit interlibrary loan requests. With ILLiad, you enter your name, address and other personal information into the system only once, at the time of your first request.

* Your loan will be handled more rapidly and accurately, because mistakes resulting from handwritten requests are eliminated.

* You can get many of your photocopies faster through electronic delivery.

* You can get information about the status of your request through the Web at any time from any location without having to call the ILL department.

* Library personnel are able to serve you better because all data about your request and its handling is stored in a searchable database. Staff can respond quickly to inquiries about your request. The library also can gather statistical information about the performance of the libraries that lend to Sweet Briar, enabling staff to make better decisions when choosing a lender to supply an item.

Virginia Tech developed ILLiad in the 1980s and it is now embraced by the OCLC as the preferred interlibrary loan system for academic libraries. Contact Malloy at ljmalloy@sbc.edu or Ext. 6307 if you have questions or need more information.

The vision of the learned societies has resulted in a high-quality digital collection documenting historical scholarship. These high-quality historical books support instruction for our core curricula as well as advanced scholarship. Most important, as education increasingly uses technology to deliver instruction and support independent research, these resources are available at our library users' convenience, from their own workstations, anytime of the day. Alabama academic institutions are also pleased that the collection has been kept affordable through the generous support of ACLS and its partners."

HEB -- a cross-searchable collection available for simultaneous, multi-user access --currently includes over 1400 books, chosen by historians, in all areas of history. For information e-mail info@hebook.org.

The Cambridge Quarterly

The Cambridge Quarterly was established on, and remains committed

to, the principle that literature is an art, and that the purpose of art

is to give pleasure and enlightenment. The journal devotes itself

principally to literary criticism and its fundamental aim to take a

critical look at accepted views. The Cambridge Quarterly also

regularly publishes articles on music, cinema, painting, and sculpture,

OCLC Holding Upgraded

OCLC holdings changed to show ISO country codes. This Sunday, December 10, 2006, OCLC FirstSearch and the WorldCat Resource Sharing web display of library holdings will be improved to show ISO country codes. For US and Canadian libraries, the holdings will display as the ISO country code followed by the state or province code. So for example an Ohio library would appear as US,OH and an Ontario library would appear as CA,ON. Libraries from the rest of the world will display ISO country codes only for the location of the library. This is an improvement, as previously the code provided was for broad and general regions and included codes like EU and ZZ, grouping a large numbers of countries together. Future planned improvements will have the country codes spelled out into the language of that interface. These improvements will be announced before the enhancement is installed.

Earthscape Earth Observatory

This month Earthscape (www.earthscape.org) completes its collection of educational
features from NASA’s Earth Observatory. These articles provide accessible summaries of
scientific research and allow learners to accompany NASA scientists as they explore and
unravel the mysteries of climate and environmental change.

Of particular interest in the October update is an "Introductory Course on
Paleoclimatology" and an "Introduction to Climate Modeling". Click the Archive button on
the homepage to access these links.

Earthscape has also recently added the Journal of Applied Meteorology and Climatology,
Geosphere and Earth Interactions to our journal collection.

Lexis Nexis Updates

The November updates have been posted to the "Content Reports" page on
the Product Information site at
http://www.lexisnexis.com/academicmigration

There is a new version of both the "A-Z List" and the "Additions and
Deletions 2006 Year-to-Date" reports.

Highlights of the content additions in November are posted to the
"What's New" page on the Product Information site.

You may notice while you are there that the on the Product Information
site has undergone some changes. We are in the process of moving all
information about the current version of LexisNexis Academic and the
redesign project onto this site. It will continue to expand over the
next few months. I would very much like to hear any suggestions about
how to make the site more useful and what kinds of information you would
like to see there.
