InfoTrac OneFile Updates

In our effort to make InfoTrac OneFile the premier resource for general
reference research, we have made some significant updates to the content
set included in the database to better serve your library patrons:

* Patrons can now read the full-text of the New York Times, every
issue from 1995 to present day -- giving them the best in news and
editorial coverage.
* Patrons can now also listen to any National Public Radio
program, as well as read transcripts, for shows produced by NPR from
1990 to present. In addition to providing a different type of news
coverage, NPR content is great to use in the classroom.
* Very soon, we will be loading every Fodor's travel guide
published in 2006 and 2007, as well as hundreds of other travel guides
from publishers such as Hunter's. During these cold, winter months, I'm
sure the number of questions related to travel are booming!
* A large set of more than 20 reference sources, from multiple
publishers, is now available under the reference tab. This gives
patrons authoritative overviews of topics in addition to the current
periodicals coverage.
* Readers can access more than 3,000 full-text periodicals highly
recommended by Bowker's Magazines for Libraries -- more full-text than
any other database. Therefore, you can trust that users are accessing
the best information.
* Discover Magazine is now being loaded full-text with no embargo
-- a great publication for students and patrons interested in science
content.
* Content can now be translated into 7 different languages, making
InfoTrac a useful resource even if your community demographics are
changing.
* InfoTrac OneFile has now reached the impressive 11,000 title
mark -- with the majority of the content full-text and with no embargo.
This means that patrons can read the current issue right away.

We are changing the game with InfoTrac. InfoTrac OneFile is becoming
the world's largest and greatest general reference resource.

For those interested in academic content, I urge you to discover
Academic OneFile -- a completely different collection of 10,000 academic
journals. This database expands on the value of Expanded Academic ASAP
by adding much more peer-reviewed content, mostly full-text with no
embargo, from publishers you respect and trust. Most of these
publications can be found in famed indices such as Web of Science,
BIOSIS, CINAHL, ERIC, RILM, EconLit and others.

Thank you for your continued support of the InfoTrac program. Now on
the new PowerSearch platform, InfoTrac is truly becoming the premier set
of resources for all libraries both in terms of content and technology.

New title in Project Muse

The following journal, previously announced as joining Project MUSE, is now online:

English Literature in Transition, 1880-1920

ELT publishes articles on fiction, poetry, drama, or subjects of cultural interest in the 1880–1920 period of British literature. Submissions are typically 20–25 double-spaced pages. While we publish reviews of books about Joseph Conrad, Henry James, James Joyce, D. H. Lawrence, Virginia Woolf, and W. B. Yeats, we do not publish articles on such major figures unless the discussion is linked to less-prominent authors of the era. We do not publish unsolicited book reviews.

EarthScape Update

The December 2006/January 2007 Earthscape update
(www.earthscape.org) calls attention to recent breakthroughs in
biofuel research and development. The NSF just announced that
diverse mixtures of native prairie plant species have emerged as a
leader in the quest to identify the best source of biomass for
producing sustainable, bio-based fuel to replace petroleum.

The research shows that mixtures of native perennial grasses and
other flowering plants provide more usable energy per acre than
corn grain ethanol or soybean biodiesel and are far better for the
environment. Even when grown on infertile soils, they can provide
a substantial portion of global energy needs, leave fertile land
for food production and help replenish depleted soil.

The fuels made from prairie biomass are "carbon negative”, which
means that producing and using them actually reduces the amount of
carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.

Excited about this development, Earthscape has put together a
collection of research, policy and educational resources exploring
the development and potential of biofuel.

New Developments in WorldCat

OCLC continues to refine and expand WorldCat on the Web. New
developments in January include:

* More visible evaluative content and Web Resource links

* Expanded faceted browse options

***MORE VISIBILITY FOR EVALUATIVE CONTENT, WEB RESOURCE LINKS***

Individual item records reached from WorldCat.org search results now
include links to supplemental Web content on the top-level page.
Previously displayed beneath the "Details" tab, these links can include
publisher-provided item descriptions, author biographies and Web sites,
tables of contents and content excerpts.

Additional links may be provided with the heading Web Resources. These
may give a user access to content related to the displayed item, such as
a print serial's Web site. In the case that the displayed item is a
digital object--such as an electronic book, or a digitally preserved
photo, document or artifact--the link may provide direct viewing or
retrieval of the object (if authentication is not required).

Example records with "Web Resources" links:

Wall Street Journal: http://worldcat.org/oclc/4299067

Consumer Reports: http://worldcat.org/oclc/1564931

"General Joseph Warren Park" (Photo, Warren PA Library Assoc.):
http://worldcat.org/oclc/67983465

"Yellowstone Falls (from below)" (Painting, Univ. of Puget Sound):
http://worldcat.org/oclc/61267918

***FACETED BROWSE NOW INCLUDES FACET EXPANSION***

The faceted browse feature of WorldCat.org search results now allows a
user to expand the abbreviated results within each facet via a "Show
More..." link.

Faceted browse lets a user filter his or her search results by
categories ("facets") using the left-hand Refine Your Search panel. This
dynamic navigation, increasingly popular in a variety
of Web search facilities, further leverages WorldCat's structured
metadata and helps users who may have difficulty narrowing a large
result set understand the refinement options available to them.

Each facet in its initial state displays only the five most relevant
results. The "Show More" link lets the user incrementally reveal 25
additional results at a time, up to 100 results within the facet.

About availability:
The elevated evaluative content and facet expansion are available via
the results of searches conducted at WorldCat.org or through the compact
WorldCat search box
<http://worldcat.org/wcpa/servlet/org.oclc.lac.affiliate.GetSearchBox>
placeable on any Web site. Direct links to WorldCat item records via the
freely distributed linking syntax
<http://worldcat.org/links/default.jsp> also provides access to these
features.

Systematic Botany to the BioOne.1 Collection

BioOne (www.bioone.org) is delighted to announce the return of Systematic Botany,
published by The American Society of Plant Taxonomists, to the BioOne.1 Collection in
2007.

ASTP ceased depositing current issues in BioOne at the end of the 2003 volume year. Their
concern at that time was that the existing BioOne business model could not provide
sufficient revenue to sustain the publication as print subscriptions decreased.

Over the last three years, the ASTP leadership has paid close attention to industry
trends and BioOne’s response to the changing market. Between 2004 and 2005 BioOne
realigned its business model to better support participating publishers, both by
providing additional revenue and increased services. Encouraged by this positive trend,
ASTP voted in late 2006 to rejoin BioOne.

The 2007 subscription to BioOne.1 will include Systematic Botany issues published in
2007, with archival content back to 2000. The gap year issues published between 2004 and
2006 will be posted early in the year to ensure a seamless user experience.

"We could not be happier to welcome the American Society of Plant Taxonomists back to
the BioOne family,” said BioOne Executive Director Susan Skomal. “Systematic Botany’s
return is an important milestone for BioOne and a testament to our continued growth and
commitment to improving our services.”

###

About BioOne

Established in 2000, BioOne is the product of innovative collaboration between scientific
societies, libraries, academe, and the private sector, who seek a sustainable,
mission-driven alternative to commercial publishing. BioOne brings to the Web a uniquely
valuable aggregation of the full-texts of high-impact bioscience research journals. Most
of BioOne's titles are published by small societies and non-commercial publishers. BioOne
provides integrated, cost-effective access to a thoroughly linked information resource of
interrelated journals focused on the biological, ecological, and environmental sciences.

About the American Society of Plant Taxonomists

The American Society of Plant Taxonomists (www.aspt.net) promotes research and training
in the taxonomy, systematics, and phylogeny of vascular and nonvascular plants.
Organized in 1935, the Society has a membership of over 1,300. In addition to publishing
Systematic Botany, the official quarterly journal of the ASPT, the Society produces an
electronic ASPT Newsletter and the Systematic Botany Monographs. The Society also
supports funds for a variety of honorary and charitable activities.

New Look for Blackwell Journals Online

I am pleased to tell you that the Blackwell Synergy online journals platform has now been relaunched with a new design. Please take a look at http://blackwell-publishing.msgfocus.com/c/1K2Z0ZZJQjHcKcNZ1

This redesign provides easier navigation, faster loading times, and improved access to tools for researchers. The main visible changes, other than the colour change, are the movement of the major functions to the left-hand menu, the grouping together of tools at each level of the website, tabs being replaced by left-menu listings and a cleaner and more modern look and feel. In addition, the new website meets the latest accessibility standards (ADA section 508 and W3C’s WAI-AA).

The new Blackwell Synergy still includes all the essential benefits for researchers, librarians and journal editors including strong journal branding at all levels. In addition to a new look, features have been repositioned to highlight options more clearly to users and enable them to make best use of the suite of tools available, such as most-read and most-cited articles, citation alerts, download to reference manager software, and reference links. The new design has been developed with feedback from researchers and librarians who have provided input during the development and testing phases.

As you know, Blackwell Synergy holds the full-text articles for over 850 online journals from Blackwell Publishing, many published on behalf of the world's leading scholarly societies. We're happy to also tell you that this month we will be loading the One Millionth article to the site! Every month we're also adding the backfiles for journals, digitized back to Volume 1, Issue 1.
