Netlibrary News

March eBook of the Month:
World-renowned gender issues expert confronts the gender pay gap and presents 25 ways for women to increase their earnings.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor, women earn a mere 80 cents for every dollar men earn. Why, forty years after the Federal Equal Pay Act, do
women still get paid less than the guys on the job? Why hasn’t the force of the feminist movement, affirmative action, and corporate lawsuits put an
end to this injustice?

In the March eBook of the Month, world-renowned gender issues expert Warren Farrell, Ph.D. argues that bias-based unequal pay for women is largely a
myth, and that women are most often paid less than men not because they are discriminated against, but because they have made lifestyle choices that
affect their ability to earn. Beyond urging women to stop seeing themselves as victims of discrimination, Why Men Earn More presents 25 concrete,
measurable ways for any woman to increase her pay.

Designed to increase awareness of online resources and highlight the value of your eBook collection, NetLibrary’s eBook of the Month is provided
through the generous support of Amacom Books and will be avialable with free, unlimited access March 1-31. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to
showcase your NetLibrary collection by sharing this frank look at workplace discrimination and the pay gap between the sexes.

Two new Turning the Pages volumes
Jane Austen's History of England
Fans of Jane Austen can now explore the entire 32-page handwritten volume of the
History of England at our Virtual Library. Written in 1791, when she was just 15 years
old, the satirical work draws on sources such as Shakespeare's history plays and
includes illustrations by Jane's eldest sister, Cassandra.
With an accompanying full-text transcription and audio reading of each passage, you
can really appreciate this early work from one of Britain's greatest novelists.

The Golf Book
The Golf Book, a masterpiece of Renaissance illumination, has also been added to
the collection. A Book of Hours, produced around the early 1540s by Flemish artist
Simon Bening, the book's name comes from one of its illustrations, which is believed to
be among the earliest depictions of people playing golf.

Other Voices

Thank you, Knovel, for breathing new life into the old International Critical Tables! This monumental 1920's work, praised for its comprehension and
reviled for its bad indexing (its nickname was the "Intentionally Cryptical Tables") has long been unavailable to most scientists. Now it has once
again become a valuable data source for chemists, thanks to Knovel's enhanced indexing of the contents. -- Bartow Culp, Chemistry Librarian, Mellon
Library of Chemistry, Purdue University

>> TUTORIAL

Properties of Building Stones

Scenario: A civil engineer is designing a dam for a large farming operation to serve as a source of water for thousands of cattle. There is an
abundance of limestone in the area and the engineer wants to know if the properties of this limestone (compressive strength, tensile strength,
porosity, etc.) would make it an acceptable building material for the project. Knovel can help.

1. On the Knovel Home Page in the first Search box enter the keyword limestone. Click the Search button. (Remember to start with a simple search!)

2. The Search Results page shows 1354 matches in 177 books. The first book in the list is International Critical Tables of Numerical Data, Physics,
Chemistry and Technology (1st Electronic Edition)--this issue's featured title. In scanning the search results, notice the first result called
Building Stones. Click the Table (73) link next to it.

3. An interactive table with properties information for building stones opens and shows 73 entries for limestone. Different limestone compounds from
across the United States and around the world have been tested and this table shows the results. Our engineer will have no problem finding relevant
data to answer whether or not limestone will work.

>> KOOL TIPS

Quickly Locate Productivity Tools

Ever want to locate Knovel's productivity tools quickly for a given title? Knovel has made it easy. In the Table of Contents for any title with
productivity tools (like International Critical Tables) you will notice along the top of the TOC area the word Filter with at least one icon next to
it. These icons serve two purposes. The first purpose is to let you know what kind of tools are available in the title. Second, if you click on the
icon, it will automatically highlight all sections where that that tool can be found. Easy! Just glance down the TOC after clicking the icon and the
chapters or sections with that particular productivity tool are highlighted in light green.

Historical Documents Available online now

Dear Colleagues,
Many disciplines use the historic documents provided in the annual
Historic Documents series from Congressional Quarterly. As of this
month, Sweet Briar has converted its subscription from paper to
electronic format and you may obtain the documents online.

Point your browser to: http://library.cqpress.com/historicdocuments/

or choose the link from the library web page at:
http://www.cochran.sbc.edu or http://library.sbc.edu/

Published annually since 1972, the Historic Documents Series now
contains 32 volumes of primary sources. Each volume includes
approximately one hundred documents covering the most significant events
of the year. These documents range from presidential speeches,
international agreements, and Supreme Court decisions to U.S.
governmental reports, scientific findings, and cultural discussions.

In CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition you can find the entire
collection of the acclaimed Historic Documents collection. The online
edition is clearly organized and easy to use. And since it contains more
than 32,000 print pages, rich in its depth and wide in its areas of
coverage. CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition also provides you
with many of the same features you find in other CQ Electronic Library
products, such as Citenow!, Email this Document, and Print this
Document. Like other CQ Electronic Library products, the CQ Historic
Documents Series Online Edition includes the Your Profile function where
you can permanently save your favorite documents.

Searching the Historic Documents Series
CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition conveniently allows you to
search for documents in multiple ways.

Key Word: CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition also offers key
word searches that allow you to quickly search the running text of every
article in the series. Your results can be sorted by the number of hits,
date, or alphabetically by title. The advance search allows you to more
specifically define the parameters of your key word search.

Browse by Title: By using the Browse by Title function, you can search
through the CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition as you would the
print books. After selecting a title, the title browse organizes the
documents by the month of their release as the print books' table of
contents does.

Browse by Topic: You may also find the Browse by Topic function helpful.
Each document is organized in topical categories, which allow you to
browse the Historic Documents Series' wide range of articles by the
subjects that interest you. Selecting the See All Topics link will
reveal the entire list of topics and subtopics in which the articles are
sorted.

Cumulative Index: CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition also
provides a cumulative index to help you navigate the entire series. From
the cumulative index you can link from the page number listed to the
exact section of the document you are looking for. Using the cumulative
index you may find references not only to the particular document you
seek but also to other entries on the same subject or related subjects.

Documents
Each article in CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition begins with
an introduction that is presented in a shaded box. This introduction
provides the historical and intellectual context for the selected
document(s). Following the introduction you will find information
regarding the source of the selected document(s).

The text that follows the shaded box is the official document. The
spelling, capitalization, and punctuation of the original or official
copy have been retained. Where the full text is not given, omissions of
material are indicated by ellipses. Insertions with in the documents by
the editors to clarify information are enclosed within brackets. Page
numbers are listed in the running text to signify where each page of the
print edition begins. These page numbers allow you to link from the
cumulative index to the exact section of the document you are looking for.

Future Additions to the Historic Documents Series
Beginning with 2004, each new volume of Historic Documents will be added
to the CQ Historic Documents Series Online Edition, ensuring you have
the most up-to-date collection of important documents. To improve your
researching experience, additional enhancements will be added to this
robust collection in the coming years.

"The real heroes of the digital revolution in higher education are
librarians; they are the people who have seen the farthest, done the
most, accepted the hardest challenges, and demonstrated most clearly the
benefits of digital information. In the process, they have turned their
own field upside down and have revolutionized their own professional
training. It is a testimony to their success that we take their
achievement for granted."

>> TUTORIAL

Ohm's Law

Scenario: A student in an introductory physics class has an upcoming laboratory session on Ohm's Law and simple circuits. One of the experiments is
the (classic) measurement of electrical resistance of a light bulb. Although the textbook and lab manual supply a good description of the
relationship between voltage, current, and resistance (Ohm's Law), our student wants another perspective on how it works. Knovel can help.

1. On the Knovel Home Page in the first Search box enter the keywords ohms law. Click the Search button.

2. The Search Results page shows 238 matches in 66 books. The first book in the list is Industrial Electronics for Engineers, Chemists, and
Technicians - With Optional Lab Experiments--this issue's featured title. In scanning the search results, notice the second result called The Water
Analog. This entry seems intriguing--a comparison of water to electricity. Click the Text (2) link next to it.

3. A PDF file opens to Chapter 2, which is devoted to a discussion of Ohm's Law and its measurements. The chapter supplies a memorable metaphor
comparing a water pumping system and its component pieces to that of an electronic circuit. The information provides an excellent framework of
understanding for our student. The chapter even supplies its own recommended experiment using common components easily purchased at a local Radio
Shack to illustrate the principles discussed.

>> KOOL TIPS

Apostrophes in Search

Notice in today's tutorial the keywords ohms law were entered in the search box. You could have also entered ohm's law (the grammatically correct
version, with an apostrophe). The search result when using the apostrophe? Identical! There is no difference in searching for terms with apostrophes
or without. This is one more way that Knovel anticipates and programs our service to make sure users quickly find the answers they seek.
