JSTOR Direct Export of Citations Now Available

JSTOR is pleased to announce the availability of a direct export feature for citations.
JSTOR users may now directly export citations to the EndNote, ProCite, Reference Manager,
and RefWorks products. Choosing the direct export option will automatically open the
citation management application, enabling more seamless exporting and importing of the
citations. In addition to the direct export option, filters for these programs are still
available for download for those who need them.

Other changes to the citation management feature include a new BibTeX formatted export
option, and a reorganization of the export options on the Saved Citations page.

For more information about JSTOR citation management, please see the Saving Citations
help file: http://www.jstor.org/help/saved_citations_list_help.html

New Search Option: Limit Searches by Language

A new option to limit your search by language is now available as part of the JSTOR
search interface. On the Advanced Search form, this option appears under the "Narrow Your
Search" section in the format of a drop-down menu that lists the languages for which the
JSTOR archive contains a significant amount of article content (English, Dutch, French,
German, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, and Spanish). By limiting a search to a particular
language, the search results will include only articles in the selected language.

A search may be limited to other languages by using the field codes that are listed in
the Search Help file, but please note that the results for these languages may only
include a small number of articles. As content is added to the JSTOR archive, however, we
expect that the amount of material available in the different languages will grow.

For more information about limiting searches, please see the Search Help file:
http://www.jstor.org/help/search.html

EarthScape Updates

The August update of Earthscape (www.earthscape.org)focuses on the
topic of carbon sequestration. Carbon sequestration is a family of
methods for capturing and permanently isolating gases that otherwise
could contribute to global climate change. Affordable and
environmentally safe sequestration approaches could offer a way to
stabilize atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide.

Several new contributors join Earthscape this month such as DOE's
Carbon Sequestration Newsletter, Lawrence Berkeley National
Laboratory and the Columbia University Center for Carbon
Management.

Several curriculum resources, teacher's guides and FAQ sites on
carbon sequestration are also offered this month.

Be sure to click on the new Archive button on the home page to
browse through past monthly updates.

ACLS History E-Book Project Enhancements

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) and the College Art Association (CAA)
are pleased to announce CAA's participation in the ACLS History E-Book Project (HEB).
Beginning with a carefully chosen selection of titles, including a new XML edition of
John Clarke's "Roman Black-and-White Figural Mosaics" to be released this fall, HEB and
CAA will explore many of the opportunities and challenges involved in bringing
art-history scholarship into the digital realm. College Art thus becomes the ninth ACLS
constituent society to join in the Project.

According to HEB project directors Eileen Gardiner and Ron Musto, "CAA's participation in
the Project comes at an important time in our planning for a broader Humanities E-Book
Project. We welcome them as an important collaborator and publisher of digital
scholarship."

According to CAA president Nicola Courtright, "CAA looks forward to this collaboration
with enthusiasm. CAA has been committed to digital publishing for some years through our
born-digital journal, caa.reviews (http://www.caareviews.org), and we believe that our
collaboration with the ACLS History E-Book Project will continue to realize important
goals for our members. The project will encourage a wider audience in the humanities to
encounter major scholarship in art history, an especially significant opportunity in this
era of increasing interdisciplinarity."

For complete information on the History E-Book Project visit its website at
www.historyebook.org or contact info@hebook.org.

Franklin Furnace and ARTstor

* Franklin Furnace and ARTstor announce collaboration agreement,
ARTstors first with an alternative space *

Since its inception in 1976, Franklin Furnace has presented what
has come to be known as variable media art work -- works that take
on new dimensions in each iteration. These works challenge the bounds
of genre, varying in the meanings they take on contextually as well as
in their physical deployment.

Digital images are fast replacing slides and slide projectors in the
teaching of art and art history. To respond to these changes, Franklin
Furnace will work with ARTstor to digitize and distribute images and
documentation of events presented and produced by Franklin Furnace,
with the goal of embedding the value of ephemeral practice into art
and cultural history.

The records of Franklin Furnace present an unparalleled resource in
that they are the only artifacts of live, ephemeral, variable media
works. While scholars still debate the locus of art in time-based,
variable media, the physical history held in Franklin Furnace's
institutional archives offers a rare and valuable resource that
captures the moment, the concept of the artist, and the historical
context in which the work was created through the prism of its
documentary parts.

Artists working in the late 70s and early 80s broached topics of
personal, social and political relevance, and artworks produced at
Franklin Furnace reflect their historical context. Artists who got
their start in alternative spaces crossed genres to address issues of
identity and politics from the perspective of the marginalized
outsider in the realms of gender, ethnicity/nationality and other
subjects at the core of cultural conflict.

Artists presented by Franklin Furnace include: Eric Bogosian,
monologist and star of stage and screen; Jenny Holzer and Ann
Hamilton, who represented the United States in the Venice Biennale;
Guillermo Gomez-Pena and Liza Lou, winners of the MacArthur "genius"
award; Mona Hatoum, the first artist to ever win the prestigious
Sonning prize; Shirin Neshat, world renowned Iranian artist and
filmmaker; and Ana Mendieta, Cuban-born artist whose retrospective was
on view in 2004 at the Whitney Museum of American Art. The individual
and collective impact of artists such as these upon larger culture is
documented in the materials contained within the archives of Franklin
Furnace:

- In 1985, Franklin Furnace presented one of the first performance
artworks to address the AIDS crisis; Pink Triangle, Not Forgotten,
by S. K. Duff. About the identification and extermination of gays in
Nazi Germany, this performance helped to kindle the public discourse
that ultimately resulted in mainstream acceptance of AIDS victims;
- Mona Hatoum's Variation on Discord and Division made a silent,
eloquent statement on the bloodshed in the Middle East in 1984;
- Robbie McCauley's 1985 My Father and the Wars explored the
embedded nature of racism in American military and social
institutions.
- Teh-Ching Hsiehs 1983 One-Year Performance (Living Outside)
installation at Franklin Furnace was comprised of 365 maps of Lower
Manhattan showing where he slept, ate, walked and slept each day;
photos of the artist during the four seasons; and his clothes worn
while living outside for one year, a silent treatise on what it means
to be homeless.

Franklin Furnace has a history of actively making its collections and
archives available for research. From pioneering storefront art space
in TriBeCa to going virtual on the Internet, Franklin Furnace has
explored new venues to reach the public. On May 11, 2006, the
organization received notification that its proposal to the National
Endowment for the Humanities--to digitize and publish on its website,
records of performances, installations, exhibits and other events
produced by the organization during its first ten yearshad been
funded. This project will create electronic access to what are now the
only remaining artifacts of these singular works of social, political
and cultural expression.

Commenting on the value of Franklin Furnaces event archives to
scholars, Barbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett, Professor of Performance
Studies, New York University writes, The Franklin Furnace archive is
of interest to a wide range of humanities fields because of the
opportunity it affords to explore the role of art and the artist in
American society in the post-World War II period. this work was
particularly responsive to the historic era in which it was made. As a
result, scholars in such fields as American Studies, art history,
visual cultural studies, theater history, performance studies, cinema
studies, cultural studies, critical studies and museum studies will
find rich research possibilities here.

Says Martha Wilson, Founding Director of Franklin Furnace Archive,
Inc., The Board of Directors made the wrenching decision to sell the
loft at 112 Franklin Street and go virtual during our 20th
anniversary season in 1996-97. At that time, in the wake of the
Culture Wars, our primary concern was to choose a venue and art medium
in the Internet that would provide the same freedom of expression
artists had enjoyed in the loft in the 70s. Ten years later, the
decision to make our website our public face has resulted in Franklin
Furnaces successful transition from physical art space to online
research resource. I am truly thrilled to be embarking on Franklin
Furnaces 30th year with ARTstors collaboration agreement and a major
grant from the NEH. The confluence of these events will help fulfill
our mission to make the world safe for avant-garde art.

WorldCat on the Web

Announcing the release of the new WorldCat.org Web site.

This site---and a downloadable WorldCat search box you can easily add to your Web site---opens the complete WorldCat database to the public, not just the smaller data subsets utilized by Open WorldCat partner sites such as Google, Yahoo! Search and others. WorldCat.org builds on the success of OCLC's Open WorldCat Program that has elevated the visibility of library materials on the open Web since the summer of 2003.

The main attraction of the new site is the WorldCat search box. Web users can now search the entire WorldCat database with the method most familiar to them: simple keywords. As in Open WorldCat, each linked result leads to a "Find in a Library" information page. From there, users can enter geographic information such as a zip or postal code, receive a list of nearby libraries that own the item, and link right to a library's online catalog record to initiate circulation activity or access electronic content directly. Users can also create their own WorldCat account and add book reviews, table-of-contents information and notes to many WorldCat items, helping to personalize their library search experience.

From WorldCat.org, any Web user or organization can also easily download and install the free, WorldCat search box to their personal or commercial Web page, allowing even more people to discover library content through WorldCat. Libraries and other groups inside and outside the OCLC cooperative are encouraged to add the box to their sites. We believe that sharing the ability to search for library materials to as many other sites as possible will help increase the awareness of libraries as primary sources of reliable information and helpful personal assistance.

To try the new WorldCat search box and download the box to your own Web site, visit the site at http://worldcat.org .

ARTstor Enhancements

* Enhancements to the Digital Library *

We are very pleased to announce that we will release a number of
enhancements to the ARTstor Digital Library tonight. While we update the ARTstor application with new features, you may experience a temporary loss of access to the ARTstor Digital Library. We expect the application to be fully restored and available by 8:00 AM on Thursday, August 3rd.

Enhancements are concentrated in the following areas: the Welcome Page, Searching and
Browsing, Viewing Results, and Personal Collections.

Welcome Page

- The newly restructured Welcome Page provides additional information
about using ARTstor and about ARTstor collections.

Searching and Browsing

- Our enhanced advanced search allows users to create more specific
queries that result in more accurate search results. Users may now
refine a search by date or a date range, or choose to search within
specific collections, specific geographic areas, and within object
classifications.
- New to the Digital Library, cross-collection browsing by Geography
and Classification. These new options are available from the Welcome
Page and afford new ways of discovering ARTstor content.
- Users may browse the Image Gallery by its source collections.
Clicking on The Image Gallery from the Welcome Page will display the
list of archives, libraries, museums, individuals, and institutions
that contribute the various collections which comprise the Image
Gallery.

Viewing Search Results

- Users have the option to sort search results by date in addition to
existing sorts by creator or title of the works.
- If search results reach 1,000 or more images, users may view the
first 1,000 images or refine their search using the new Advanced
Search.

Personal Collections

- Instructor-level users have the ability to upload audio files (MP3)
to their Personal Collections.
- Instructor-level users will have an additional 500 MB of space for
their Personal Collections, raising the total amount to 1 GB of space
on ARTstors servers for images, audio files, and OIV presentations.

Our online help (www.artstor.org/webhelp) and the documentation
found in the Using ARTstor section of our public website will be
updated by the end of the day Thursday.
