New in ARTstor

* New addition to the ARTstor Digital Library: Detroit Institute of
the Arts *

We are pleased to announce the inclusion of more than 1,700 images
from the Detroit Institute of the Arts in ARTstor. These join the
approximately 100,000 images from the former AMICO Library now
available through ARTstor. The Detroit Institute of the Arts is home
to some 60,000 works of art, collectively constituting a survey of
human creativity from prehistory through the 21st century. The DIA’s
collection is particularly strong in European painting, Italian
Renaissance sculpture, French decorative art, African art, American
painting, and Islamic textiles.

Among the DIA’s highlights that are now available in ARTstor are Fra
Angelico’s Annunciatory Angel and Virgin Annunciate of 1450/1455, as
well as the same artist’s slightly earlier Madonna and Child; Pieter
Bruegel the Elder’s The Wedding Dance; Jacob van Ruisdael’s The Jewish
Cemetery; and the first van Gogh painting to enter a U.S. museum, the
Self Portrait of 1887.

To browse these images, please click on “Image Gallery” on the ARTstor
“Welcome Page” and then select “Detroit Institute of the Arts.”

Books In Print Enhancements

Over the past few months, we have been working to bring you improvements to GlobalBooksInPrint.com that will positively affect the speed, stability, and currency of your database subscription. Bowker has implemented a new search engine that has resulted in increased speed*, fewer interruptions, and increased timeliness of content.

Increased Speed: The average search time is an average of three seconds, which is a 116% increase in speed over the old search engine.**

Stability: With the new search engine, GlobalBooksInPrint.com can handle a greater variety and quantity of data, meaning fewer service interruptions and increased productivity.

Currency of Content: With our new collection process, we will be providing you access to new content sooner. This new process reduces the time for updated content to be reflected on the website from an average of six days to an average of two days.

These enhancements are the direct result of feedback from our customers. As we continue to improve GlobalBooksInPrint.com, please feel free to offer us your comments and suggestion on how we can better serve you, your library, and your patrons. Please offer direct feedback to Product Manager John Krafty by e-mailing John.Krafty@bowker.com.

Please take a moment to forward this to all of your colleagues who use GlobalBooksInPrint.com. Encourage all users of the product to sign-up for the customer mailing list so they too can stay up-to-date on their GlobalBooksInPrint.com Subscription.

Special Note about The English Journal:

The English Journal was published in two versions, a regular edition and a "college
edition." JSTOR has recently discovered that we have digitized some volumes of the
"college edition" in place of the regular edition. We will replace the incorrect volumes
(published between 1928 and 1939) as soon as possible. Please contact JSTOR User Services
(support@jstor.org) with any questions.

Although JSTOR seeks to provide every issue from a journal's run, on occasion there are
issues that we are unable to find. To see which issues are missing, or for information
about how to help JSTOR complete the archive, please visit JSTOR's Back Issues Needed
page http://www.jstor.org/about/issues/index.html.

More detailed information about all JSTOR titles and collections can be accessed at

ARTstor Upgrades

* New Citation Export *

ARTstor users can now save and export image citations within the
ARTstor Digital Library. Users may save images and/or image groups
into a citation list. Saved citations may then be emailed; directly
exported into EndNote, ProCite, or Reference Manager; printed; or
saved as a tab-delimited file. Each citation includes the creator,
title, date, repository, ARTstor image ID number, and persistent URL
for each image.

In order to save an image into a citation list, simply select one or
multiple images by clicking on them once while viewing the thumbnail
page. With one or more images highlighted, go to the Image Groups menu
located in the toolbar, and chose “Save selected images as citations.”
To view your saved citations, choose “View saved citations” from the
Image Groups menu. This will open a window from which you can export
and download all or selected saved citations.

Detailed instructions for using the new citation export feature will
be added to our online help (www.artstor.org/webhelp) by October 20th.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

* Image Viewer Enhancements *

All users now have the ability to save and print zoomed areas of an
image within the Image Viewer. In order to accomplish this, we moved
the print and save icons within the Image Viewer. You can now find the
print and save functions in the row of icons directly beneath the
image, and directly to the left of the thumbnail map. You can learn
more about printing and downloading images from the Image Viewer in
our online help. Please note that the change in icon placement in
our online help will not be reflected until October 20th, however, the
functionality and instructions remain the same.

ARTstor and Erich Lessing Archives

* New Addition to the ARTstor Digital Library: High Resolution Images
of Key Works of World Art from the Erich Lessing Archives *

ARTstor recently formed a collaboration with Art Resource and Erich
Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archives (Vienna, Austria). Through this
collaboration, ARTstor will make available approximately 10,000 high
quality images of world art and architecture, with a special dual
focus on 1) key artists of the major European schools and 2) the
collections of the major European museums outside Italy, including the
leading art museums of Austria, France, Germany, Great Britain, the
Netherlands, and Spain. These images, on average 120 megabytes in
size, have been scanned from large format (4x5" or 8x10") color
transparencies made by Erich Lessing in the course of a distinguished
career spanning several decades of photographic campaigns around the
world.

The first fruits of this collaboration are now available to ARTstor
users. They include nearly 300 high quality images of key works of art
and architecture frequently consulted by ARTstor users. These works
range from the Venus of Willendorff and to Giotto's Arena Chapel
frescoes, and from the Mona Lisa to paintings by Edgar Degas in the
Musee d'Orsay.

For a list of some of the masterpieces of world art now available from
the Lessing Archives, please see http://www.artstor.org/info/collections/lessing_list.jsp.

To browse these new ARTstor images, please click on “Image Gallery” on
the ARTstor “welcome page” and then select “Art, Archaeology and
Architecture from Erich Lessing Culture and Fine Arts Archives.” Or
simply search the keyword phrase “Erich Lessing.”

Please note that we have "clustered" many of these superior images
with other ARTstor images that depict the same works of art or offer
details of those works. For an example of this clustering process,
through which we are striving to help ARTstor users find the optimal
image of a given work of art as well as related detailed views, please
search for "Donatello David"
